Thoughts on New Upperweights

Post by S Cube »

I was just thinking, isn't it something how all the good 215 pounders from last year are at 220? I thought with 195 being added that we would see a few of those good kids down at 195, but it seems as if they've all settled in at 220, along with two of the best heavyweights in the state in Rizzo and Dailey (Fort Lebouf) dropping down as well. As it turns out, 220 is absolutely loaded statewide and 195 is the weakest statewide IMO. Also, it seems like the lighter weights are a little more jam packed with good wrestlers.

Personally, I don't care for the new weight classes. What does a wrestler have to gain from wrestling 220 in high school terms of going to the next level? They would either have to drop a lot of weight to get to 197, or be a small heavyweight in the collegiate ranks. Thoughts?

I'll probably get a response from Dave Marko here, seeing how he seems to have a comment about how terrible the new weights are in every single quote he has in the newspapers.

I have a son that wrestles 212 in junior high, and not really excited about the 220 weight class. It s possible for him to drop down to 197 , but would be alot of work on his part. Like you said, 220 is packed.
