Tackle numbers

Post by youngbuck »

Is this one statistic that could just be done away with, it seems so subjective. Got to enjoy a conversation about how many tackles someones relative had this year.
Although this has gotten better since the coaching changes at some area schools
Used to be amusing that three of the top ten tacklers were from the same schoo

There is only one full tackle per play or two assists per play. Only in the high school game are these stats skewed.

Agreed. One school comes to mind that can control a game and has 4 players with double digit tackles and other team barely ran 40 plays total

Today's Tribune Democrap

Croft, Central Cambria 21 Solo 99 Total
Moran, Richland 12 Solo 87 Total

Apparently as long as you jump on the pile, you get credit for a tackle.

I've noticed this for a few years. I made a post maybe 3 years ago, and I feel Berlin does a bang up job on accurate tackle stats. Seem to be the only school in the area that does them correctly. BM did a good job when Salem was at the helm, now they seem inflated.

The NFHS publishes a statisticians manual that a lot of coaches in the area need to read. There should only be 1 solo or 2 assisted tackles per play (the manual does say on the rarest occasions there could be 3 assisted). I think many people would be surprised that an assisted tackle is not a .5 tackle, but rather a full tackle scoring wise. So if a player had 3 solo and 5 assist he would have a total of 8 tackles that game. Sacks, while having their own category, are also counted as tackles.

Tackle stats are subjective and it all depends on who is taking/keeping stats. Unfortunately, sometimes that person keeping/taking stats is a parent or relative of one of the football players and if their kid is looking a playing defense in college, there might be some extra tackles given. Not saying that it happens at every school, but I bet it happens at some. I talked with one coach and he said they stick to the rule that only two people can be credited for a tackle if more that one person is involved. Normally, he said they will give the credit to the first to players in on the tackle. Solo tackles are easy, but when a group of players is involved it can be tricky. I get leery about tackle stats when I see a DB/Safety/CB having well over 100+ tackles. To me that says that your DL and LB's can't tackle and your team isn't likely to be very good if your secondary is making all your tackles.
