it isn't perfect, but it's better...again, you have to think big picture, not just a small area...will there always be powerhouses in each class? yes...this isn't going to help a team like ferndale win a state title..but it will help them be competitive in a few more games

If it's such a problem, those schools need to give up their teams. Saltsburg has no business playing football...20 wins in the past 12 years, gimme a break.  Ferndale's even worse.

Explain please Bill how Ferndale will be more competitive when they will be playing the same schedule they are playing now? I don't think any teams are going to be bumped up in class? Maybe windber?

How will this make them more competitive?  They will play literally the same exact teams they've been playing for decades.

And prevent those 20 some kids from playing football all together.  Yeah that's the answer.  And don't say that they can co-op with a neighboring school.  Look at Rockwood.  They had 20 some kids on varsity alone when they fielded a team.  Since the co-op with Berlin, they have what 5 or 6 total from 7-12?  They won't want to go play with a team and school they aren't familiar with.  Those 20 some kids, will dwindle down to 5.  Fact.

Hey, they can continue to be a laughing stock if they want to.  But did it ever occur to you that maybe more don't want to play because....THEY SUCK.

You also can't compare Rockwood kids not wanting to travel 14 miles to Berlin with Ferndale, less than 2 miles from GJHS.

Football teams sucks = kids don't want to play; kids don't want to play = football team never gets better. It's a hole they can't climb out of and will only get worse as enrollments dwindle.  School districts across the middle of the state are going to have to have these come to Jesus moments real quick and realize there are way too many districts that can't sustain themselves.  And Saltsburg wants to be its own, lol.

Peyton is right on the money. New classificstions dont change the small school turnout problem. 20-25 kids will always be the same in 11man football.

Next birdas comment about success. Penns manor got their 1st winning season in over a decade in 2007. The program was the laughing stock of the heritage, unknown in d6. Since that year they havent posted a losing record and become a heritage and d6 power.

They only teams this helps is the small A, AA, AAA, and AAAA teams that make playoffs. If those teams don't make playoffs now, they won't in the future playing 11 man. Why? Because they will play the same exact teams in the regular season they've been playing for years. It only helps come playoff time, and only helps the smaller schools in each classification who make playoffs.

Which is exactly why the WPIAL model needs to be applied across the board and the 17 teams that will be in A in District 6 are divided into two conference that play a full conference schedule and a few crossover games to fill out the year.

We will have to see when the new numbers come out and schools opt to play up. Many like Clairton and BG don't because for them to move up to AA it would be a huge jump under the current 4 class system. We may very well find that those same teams want to play up to avoid the constant blow outs they see now. We also haven't seen if the conferences themselves will adjust their schedules with the new numbers once they're released. We're in the infancy of this new system, I'm sure we'll see situations change somewhat. Until then, we'll just have to wait and see.
