What is wrong with the NFL?

Post by say_oww »

Yes, that is a sarcastic question.  However, after seeing the NFL take the gutless position that Cam Newton deserved a flag for taunting Monday night after he was hit high by the Skins linebacker who launched at him while he was sliding, yet the defensive player didn't get a penalty - I have completely lost what little respect I had for this league.  Every other big name quarterback in the game who is hit when he slides is rewarded with a 15 yard penalty.  Why aren't guys getting penalized and fined when they give Newton shots to the head?  Is this another race thing???

A few quarterbacks get the superstar treatment, other don't. Brady and Manning were always protected with flags, Roethlisberger doesn't get sacked as much as he used to (better line, smarter decision making) but he took some non-penalized cheap hits before and still does to some degree. I'm not even a die-hard Steeler fan thinking there's some conspiracy against the team like some yinzers do, but Ben has taken some seriously dangerous hits without repercussions. The league has their favorites, you would think the reigning MVP Cam Newton would be protected a little more.

The big problem with the nfl and officials in consistency. Every game seems to have totally different calls in similar situations and its frustrating

As Tim Hasselbeck pointed out yesterday it's not just Cam Newton. Alex Smith, Stafford, Tannehill, Palmer, Wilson all took illegal hits this past week (Tannehill the week before) that were not flagged.

I think it has to deal with their size also. For example, when Shaq was dominanting he would not get a lot of foul calls for him cause he was so much bigger and stronger then everyone. And these 2 QB's are probably the most physically opposing in the league and that's why it happens more often to them

Newton has taken at least 15 hits to the head this year that weren't penalized.  For the league to make a statement defending the call is just plain cowardly.  Its nothing more than pandering to the officials.

Played the game a long time on the defensive side of the ball.  Nothing worse than having someone who is elusive make you miss near the sideline.  Those athletes who make someone miss on one play and then at the last second slide on the next series, don't get the benefit of the doubt in my mind.  As soon as you let off the gas, the QB makes a move and scrambles for an extra 5, 10, or 15 yards.  If Cam makes a move and gains a first down on that play everybody is thrilled, except the guys on defense.  There is no doubt in my mind Cam is a good enough athlete to make that happen.  So for a defensive guy, there is no way to win.  If you don't play to the whistle he makes you miss, but if you do then .....
I'm with the defense on this one, although I realize I will probably be in the minority.  My judgement is probably clouded from taking on too many fullbacks who lead with their heads but never got called.

Goodell outdid himself yesterday when he fined Odell Beckham Jr for donning Craig Sager inspired cleats which he intended to auction for charity.  Truly a class move!

Stay Classy NFL!
