Even if they did, he would still only be the 7th leading tackler on the 2008 Northern Cambria football team.
Ok bad joke, I'll see myself out.

I’m really surprised you don’t have to be on some type of initial roster, that’s just messed up

Don't you also need a permission slip from a parent or guardian to participate in a sport?

What's interesting is has this scenario ever happened: say 1 or 2 kids (brothers for instance) move in from another state a week before the regular season ends and are exceptional basketball or soccer players. And they joined a marginal team but made that team much improved upon their arrival. That's why I'm surprised there aren't roster restrictions not initially, but at some cutoff point.

I'm sure Google would answer that, but I'm going to assume a permission slip or a waiver doesn't need to be signed for each individual sport, one should take care of the whole school year. But I could be wrong.
I'm also going to assume this was planned out for a day or two, and he didn't show up in jeans and started playing out of the stands. So I'm sure whatever needed to be taken care of, was taken care of.
But then again stranger things have happened. I'm just surprised it did. Most football coaches wouldn't be happy about a kid playing in an event like this. I recall being in high school and kids not being allowed to participate in intramurals in-season, let alone another competitive sport. It was a big no-no.
