Here's a re-capping of the games, for those who have been living in the caves.
Quarterfinal Recaps - Western Region
Class (AAAA)
Pittsburgh Central Catholic 44, Erie McDowell 3
McDowell, the District #10-(AAAA) Champs, were unable to play giant killer like they did earlier this season against nationally ranked St. Francis of Buffalo, NY. The Vikings were just too much, mainly on the both sides of the line. Eugene Jarvis had 230 yards on 22 carries and 4 TDs and went over 4,000 yards for his career, becoming only the 5th RB in WPIAL history to do so. CC goes to 14-0 and will play District # 3-6 (AAAA) champ Bishop McDevitt while McDowell ends its season at 11-2.
Bishop McDevitt 48, Carlisle 28
The Crusaders to 10-2 and take the District 3-6 (AAAA) crown with by a 20-point margin over Carlisle. McDevitt's LeSean McCoy, only a junior, has been out of this world in the playoffs. In this game he ran for 352 yards on 42 carries and scored 7 TDs. For the playoffs (3 games), he has 1,097 yards on 106 carries and 15 TDs. Yes, that's an average of OVER 300 yards per game! For the 2004 campaign McCoy has 2,788 yards and 31 TDs. In just a two-season career as a starter he has amassed over 5700 yards. The Crusaders advance to play nationally ranked Pittsburgh Central Catholic. In years past this would have been a great state championship game but with the re-shifting of District 3 in the western bracket, a western final will have to do.
Class (AAA)
Thomas Jefferson 20, Selinsgrove 14
The Jaguars overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit to beat District# 4-(AAA) champ Selinsgrove in overtime. Brad Dawson picked off a Seals' pass and returned it deep into their territory. Dan Gigerich scored and T.J. tacked on the two-point conversion to tie the score. The Jaguars had a chance to win by a field goal attempt from 45 yards by Evan Browne was wide right. The Seals went on offense first in the extra session but were intercepted. Gigerich scored on another touchdown run to seal the victory for the WPIAL champs, who improve to 12-2 and will take on Erie Strong Vincent. Selinsgrove finishes another strong season at 11-2.
Erie Strong Vincent 7, Perry Traditional Academy 0
Mario Henry scored the lone touchdown of the afternoon and it was all the Colonels would need as they knocked off the Pittsburgh City Champs. Henry had 113 yards on 21 carries for Strong Vincent who improves to 11-1 and will take on WPIAL champ Thomas Jefferson. The Commodores end the 2004 campaign at 11-2.
Class (AA)
Tyrone 28, Seton LaSalle 7
Brinton Mingle had 109 yards on 23 carries as the Tyrone Golden Eagles did what shocked many people not only in the Pittsburgh area but across the state and that is beat, in convincing fashion, the high-powered Seton LaSalle Rebels. Rebels' QB Bill Stull was held to 103 yards passing (11-for-20) and was picked off three times. The loss was the first of the season to Lou Cerro's club as they finish 2004 at 13-1. John Franco's Tyrone club improves to 12-1 and will take on Grove City in the western final in Class (AA).
Grove City 28, Brookville 12
District #10-AA Champ Grove City (10-2) moves on with a victory over Cinderella Brookville, which ended their season at 6-7. The Eagles were paced by Jack Vallely who had 114 yards on 17 carries and QB Jim Jasowick who was 6-for-8 with 127 yards and 1 TD through the air and carried the ball 6 times for 52 yards on the ground, including a 36 yard TD run in the second quarter. GC advances to the semifinal round where they will take on Tyrone.
Class (A)
Rochester 41, Berlin Brothersvalley 14
Sophomore Brent Whiteleather has 213 yards on 31 carries and QB Cory Schleyer threw 3 first half touchdown passes, including a 46-yard strike to Derek Moye who made a great adjustment on the pass. The WPIAL champs improve to 11-3 and will take on undefeated Curwensville in the Class Western Final. Doug Paul's Mountaineers finish the year 11-1.
Just as an aside, I attended this game in person as it was played at Trojan Stadium which is in my hometown. Being that I was in town visiting for the holiday I thought I'd take in a game and I got lucky that a state quarterfinal would be played in my backyard (literally speaking, as Trojan Stadium is within walking distance of my mother's house). I have been to 14 games this season, seeing 16 different teams and I have not seen fans as passionate and loyal as those from Berlin. They came in big numbers, filling up just about every seat in the home side bleachers and cheered all game, no matter how bad the Mountaineers were losing. Well done, and congrads on witnessing your team have a great year. I am sure Coach Paul and the squad are more than appreciative.
Curwensville 34, Sharpsville 6
For the second straight week, the Golden Tide had 0 passing yards and for the second straight week they won big inspite of this fact. The Sipe brothers were yet again the story as senior Nate scored all five Golden Tide touchdowns on his 29 carry, 268-yard performance while sophomore Nick chipped in with 110 yards on 14 carries and kicked 4 PATs. Curwensville (12-0) moves on to play WPIAL A champ and perennial Class A power at both the WPIAL and PIAA level, Rochester. The Sharpsville Blue Devils end their season at 11-1.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and then there was... ONE!!!!!!!!!
Well, the quarterfinal round of PIAA football playoff action has come and gone and the sole survivor from the District #5-6 scene is the Class (AA) champion Tyrone Golden Eagles. They prevailed over W.P.I.A.L. (AA) champ Seton LaSalle. District# 6-(A) champ Bellwood Antis fell to District #3 Camp Hill while District# 5-A champ Berlin Brothersvalley lost to WPIAL champ Rochester. District #6-(AAA) champ Johnstown fell last week and the lone rep in the District #3-6 (AAAA) bracket, State College fell in the first weekend of playoff action.
So there you have it, "60" teams in District #5 and #6 went to camp this past August, many with high hopes. As we come upon the first weekend in December only John Franco's Golden Eagles are still alive. Good luck to them this weekend against District #10-AA champ Grove City. As for the other "59" squads, hats off to another outstanding scholastic football season.
