Fiesta Bowl- Pitt vs. Utah...other BCS bowls as well...

Post by Coach »

Sugar:
Auburn vs. V Tech (I hope Auburn wins to help bring a playoff system to college football. They're in the same boat as PSU in 94.)

Rose:
Michigan vs. Texas (if Texas would have been left out AGAIN this would have had UT in a major uproar. I can't believe that Cal didn't get in to keep the B10 vs P10 bowl alive)

Orange:
Oklahoma vs. USC (I would have rather watched Auburn play in this game...I wish USC would have lost to UCLA the other day. They had a few scares vs teams that aren't too good....it makes me wonder how they held the top spot. It is because they were ranked there to begin with. Oregon State, UCLA, Cal, and one other game I can't remember were all pretty close games if I recall correctly.)

If there were playoffs this would be so much more exciting and the football world would love it!

Cal plays a cupcake schedule, and failed to blow out USM yesterday. USM is a very good team, and there was really no chance Cal would blow them out. But because they play in C-USA, even though they are defending champions, voters think USM is a joke. Look at Cal's schedule. The only team they beat was Arizona State, and ASU is not very good. ASU is only "good" because they are good enoughto beat up the rest of the very pathetic Pac-10. Cal lost to the best team on their schedule. Texas is playing better right now than they have in years.

Texas lost to #2 Oklahoma.
Cal lost to #1 USC.

By my calculations, Cal lost to the better opponent, there for they should get rewarded with the payday.

Its just a stupid concept. Get a playoff in there, and that will fix this whole contraversy thing. Keep the bowls, just play the playoff games at the bowl sites. Keep the BCS for rankings to decide who gets in the bowl games.

Well then Auburn should be playing Oklahoma for the title then because USC played that same cupcake schedule. They had some close calls in their run too.

They beat Stanford by 3.
Oregon State by 8.
UCLA by 5.
Cal by 6.

Those are some close games versus weak competition. Auburn, on the other hand, played the SEC's best week in and week out.

Different solutions fit different years. Who is to say Auburn isn't the best team...their logical argument is they went undefeated in the best conference in the country. Nobody can argue their schedule. This years solution would be a Utah-USC and an Auburn-Oklahoma Semifinal in two of the 4 BCS bowls with the winners playing two weeks later in a college Nat'l championship. The NCAA will never sanction this however. BCS is taking all this heat but if they hadn't stepped up and formed it you would have none of these games even possible.

What confuses me about this year is the following:

1. Why did the Rose Bowl choose Texas over Cal? Maybe they didn't have a choice and that's pershaps where I'm confused. I thought BCS rules were #1 and #2 play, the other conf. champs get in automatically, Minor Conferences get in if they are #6 or above, and Bowls choose at-larges? That's why I thought the Rose would choose Cal....to keep their B10/P10 tradition. I'm guessing that the rules changed and Bowls must take top teams in order based on BCS? Can anyone confirm.

2. Pitt is taking some heat....they shouldn't....they played by the BCS/Big East rules and earned their spot. It could have been worse, it could have been Syracuse. The Big East will certainly be scrutinized the next couple years and had better step it up. For all the pre-season WVU hype, they were a huge disappointment.

Another thought...Did anyone else notice that Tyler Palko (Pitt QB) improved more in 4 weeks that PSU's Zack Mills improved in 4 years?????

1. This is the least important comment, but in Mills' behalf, he had garbage receivers except the year he had Bryant Johnson. Was he a disappointment? You bet, but he would have been better with better players around him on offense. If you can open the field and throw, then you can run, then you can throw some more (even better).

2. They did not have to take Texas...they could have taken Cal. I think they may have taken Texas for two reasons. First being that Texas did not make the BCS last year even though they finished in the top 6. They just can't seem to get by Oklahoma or they'd be in the running for the title. IF they had been left out two years in a row...the BCS would be under even more pressure...maybe the BCS "suggested" that Texas be taken? Second, PSU played Texas in the Fiesta Bowl a while back (when JoeNas played) and the Texas contigent was pretty big. I bet they would bring a lot more fans than Cal. Cal hasn't been good for very long, so I don't know if they'd have a ton of fans jumping on the bandwagon, making a decent trip to Phoenix, etc.

Good point HR about Palko. Hope his ascent continues because Mills also started out strong and really bottomed out this year.

I think the Rose Bowl is in CA isn't it? The Fiesta is in Arizona.
