Southern Columbia 35, Rochester 0
The Associated Press :

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Make it three straight Class (A) titles for Southern Columbia.

Dan Latorre ran for 150 yards and four touchdowns, and the Tigers capped a perfect season with a 35-0 rain-soaked victory over Rochester to win the PIAA Class A championship on Friday. Southern Columbia joined Central Bucks West (AAAA) and Berwick (AAA) as the only schools to win three consecutive PIAA titles.

"This one's 10 times better," said Latorre, a senior quarterback. "This year was my year and for all the other seniors."

Henry Hynoski rushed for 132 yards and the Tigers had 432 yards of total offense.

Southern Columbia (15-0) beat the Rams in the title game for the second time in three years. Southern played its 10th championship game in 11 years and its fifth one against Rochester. It also won the championship in 1994.

The Tigers went wild, yanking on their state championship hats and dashing on the drenched turf toward the trophy. "This is ours, guys!" one yelled out among the crowd. "I just want to touch it!" screamed another.

They mobbed together for a team photo chanting "Three-peat!" and held up a banner that read "Angels on the Goalposts" with the numbers of former players Eric Barnes and Tarik Leghlid, who drowned last summer.

"It probably was the toughest with what the kids had to work through together and deal with," said coach Jim Roth. "It was as special as any for that reason."

Rochester (12-4) snapped a seven-game winning streak. The Rams have won three PIAA Class (A) title games.

With a heavy, steady rain falling, Southern Columbia did what it does best in relying on the running game. The Tigers — who rushed for 770 yards over Pius X in a quarterfinal game — ran 49 times for 398 yards against Rochester.

Roth, though, was more concerned about the defense after allowing 30 and 47 points in the last two playoff wins. The Tigers held the Rams to only 81 total yards.

Matt Koziol had two interceptions and deflected two passes for Southern Columbia.

"That's the thing I'm most pleased with," Roth said. "A lot of people were looking at those points the last couple of weeks. I knew the run defense was still there and it was today."

Latorre had touchdown runs of 2 and 19 yards in the first quarter and a 1-yard run in the second to help Southern Columbia to a 21-0 halftime lead.

Then Latorre ran for a 69-yard touchdown run through the sloppy field on the second play of the third quarter. Latorre also threw for 34 yards — he is a quarterback, after all. He rushed for 20 touchdowns this year and finished his high school career with more than 5,000 total yards.

"You couldn't ask for anything better," said Latorre, who had taped on his cleats the numbers of his two teammates who perished.

Ray Snarski added a 55-yard TD run in the third that made it 35-0.

It was the first Class (A) shutout since Rochester beat Southern Columbia 16-0 in 2001.

The Rams couldn't do much of anything, though it seemed general ineptness was as much a factor as the weather. Cory Schleyer threw three interceptions and the Rams lost a fumble.

"We were overmatched," said Rochester coach Gene Matsook. "There are some times you have to give the other team credit. We weren't the big engine that roared; we were the little engine that could."

Southern Columbia lost four consecutive Class A title games from 1998-2001 before finally breaking through in 2002 with a 31-6 victory over Rochester. The Tigers followed with a 49-20 win over Bishop Carroll last year.

Rochester still leads the championship series over Southern Columbia, 3-2.

"Let's get a best-of-seven going," Matsook said.
