Basketball High School Boys

Central Cambria 63 Indiana 43

EBENSBURG - The Red Devils used 10 3-pointers and a 21-9 fourth-quarter bulge to pull away from visiting Indiana on Monday.

Wade Klezek led Central Cambria with 17 points. Red Devils teammate Justin Davidson had 12 points and Augie Rodkey added 11. Chris Kuhar led the Little Indians with 15.


Blairsville 87 Penn Cambria 69

CRESSON - Adam Highberger torched Penn Cambria with 41 points Blairsville walked away with a non-conference win.

The Bobcats pulled ahead early, taking a 61-26 lead into the half. Luke Tomaselli led Penn Cambria with 22 points and Ryan Wetzel had 12.

Cambria Heights 51 Huntingdon 43

HUNTINGDON - Ben Vescovi's 19 points led all scorers as Cambria Heights defeated Huntingdon.

The Highlanders held the Bearcats in check during the first three periods, carrying a 31-23 lead into the fourth.

Conemaugh Valley 77 Richland 66

Conemaugh Valley and Richland each had a trio of scorers in double figures, but the Blue Jays' three were all above 20 points.

Josh Lupek (26 points), Robert Gunby (23) and Dan Pollino (21) led Conemaugh Valley to the win. The Blue Jays also hit on 25 of 37 trips to the free throw line.

Richland got a 19-point performance from Mark Lentz, 18 from Eric Wingard and 13 from Eric Ahlers.

North Star 38, Derry 27

BOSWELL - Josh Ryan led the Cougars with 14 points and eight rebounds in a North Star win over District 7 Derry.

Nick Mignogna aided the Cougars' cause with 12 points and five assists. North Star's Jon Shank (nine rebounds) and Dave Kavar (eight rebounds, seven blocks) helped to contain the Trojans.

Bedford 60 Chestnut Ridge 50

BEDFORD - Troy Harris scored 19 points and John Marshall added 12 for Bedford.

Brian Barefoot and Ben Way led the Lions with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Forest Hills 59, Somerset 55

SIDMAN - Four free throws proved to be the difference as Forest Hills edged Somerset.

Each team hit six 3-pointers but the Rangers (6-5) hit 9-of-15 foul shots, while the Eagles (4-10) were 5-of-8 on free throws.

Jeff Rolla scored 20 points, Dan Myers had 14 and Rick Penatzer added 12 for Forest Hills.

Ryan Uphouse's 19 points led Somerset while Conlan Walsh had 13.

High School Girls ====================================

Windber 49, Ferndale 34

WINDBER - Michelle George had 19 points and eight steals as Windber pulled away from Ferndale.

Steph Ott chipped in 12 points for the Ramblers. Ali Russell and Nicole Folta each scored 14 points to pace Ferndale.

Meyersdale 36, Shade 29

MEYERSDALE - The Red Raiders overcame a cold-shooting first quarter in which they only scored two points on their way to a WestPAC triumph over Shade.

Vanessa Housel and Carinne Moser each had 10 points for Meyersdale. Danielle Zubek led all scorers with 14 points and Panthers' teammate Laura Sesack added a dozen.

Central Cambria 53, United 30

ARMAGH - Linsey Eckenrode's 20 points led a trio of Central Cambria scorers in double digits.

Krista Sossong's 11 points and Brittany Olsavsky's 10 paced the Red Devils. United's Alyssa Oliver had seven points.

Blacklick Valley 55, Portage 48

PORTAGE - Blacklick Valley's Whitney Warmus strung together 32 points as the Vikings defeated Portage.

Portage's scoring punch came from Emily Golden's 16 points along with 13 points apiece from Krista Kerch and Sara Burda.

Cambria Heights 47 Huntingdon 30

PATTON - Highlanders' sophomore Amber Dubyak had 18 points and 14 rebounds as Cambria Heights defeated Huntingdon.

Teammate Erin Hoover chipped in 16 points for the hosts. Heather Young led the Bearcats with 10 points.

Forest Hills 49 Bishop Carroll 39

EBENSBURG - Krista Tedjeske led Forest Hills with 17 points while teammate Brittany Skyles added 11 and Cara Smay contributed 10 for the Rangers.

Johnstown 45, Penn Cambria 42

Johnstown outscored visiting Penn Cambria 17-4 in the first quarter and then hung on for its second victory of the season.

Vera McDaniel added 10 points for the Trojans (2-10). Lauren Capriotti scored 13 points for Penn Cambria and Becca Yahner chipped in with 11.

C. Township 57, North Star 38

DAVIDSVILLE - Holly Muir scored 22 points as Conemaugh Township knocked off rival North Star.

Kayla Zambanini and Jamie Gennett each had 10 points for the Indians (10-3).

April Trexler led North Star (10-3) with 11 points.

College Men Eagles tame Mountain Cats======================

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Carl Richburg's hot hand led No. #19 Southern Indiana to a 100-72 victory over Pitt-Johnstown.

Richburg hit 7-of-8 shots from the field and went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line for a 23-point night. He also led the Eagles (10-3) with eight assists and was one of five Southern Indiana players in double digits. Chris Thompson poured in 21 points and Geoff Van Winkle had 14.

Guard Dwight Hines led UPJ with 18 points and teammate Paul Byer added 15 points for the Mountain Cats (6-8).

Baseball Pirates caravan returns

ALTOONA - Former Altoona Curve standouts Jack Wilson and Rob Mackowiak will be returning to the city.

The pair will be joined by starting pitcher Oliver Perez as part of the annual Pittsburgh Pirates Winter Caravan, which will be at Logan Valley Mall from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 27.

Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon will also be on hand, as will pitching coach Spin Williams and broadcaster Lanny Frattare.

Football Patriots sign CB Hank Poteat

FOXBORO, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed cornerback Hank Poteat to their roster Monday, less than a week before their playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts and NFL MVP Peyton Manning.

The Patriots' secondary has been hit by injuries all season. Ty Law missed the last nine games and went on injured reserve last week; Tyrone Poole has been out since September; safeties Eugene Wilson and Randall Gay also have spent time on the injury list.

Poteat, who also returns punts, played in 41 games over three NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and played in one game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has played in two playoff games, starting for the Steelers in the 2002 wild-card game.
