Windber Ramblers get a nice win !!!

Windber leads rival all the way

WINDBER - Just when the WestPAC North division was beginning to take shape for the stretch drive, the Windber boys basketball team reminded everyone that it is to be reckoned with, scoring a 50-44 victory over visiting Conemaugh Township on Friday night.

In front of a raucous crowd, the Ramblers led from the outset and got timely turnovers at the end to hold off an Indians charge.

Matt Wilson hit three key baseline layups in the early stages of the fourth quarter to open up a nine-point gap for the hosts.

"They were trying to get into a little press," Wilson said. "I knew that if I filtered back a little bit, I would be wide open so I just decided to do that and I got one layup, so I figured that I would keep doing it and it kept on working and they were some pretty big buckets."

Frank Rummel hit five 3-pointers for the Ramblers (9-6, 4-2 WestPAC North), tying Steve Slatcoff's 2002-03 school record for single season 3-pointers with 52.

"We wanted to stay close early," Windber coach Kevin Charney said. "We were able to hit some 3s. Frank Rummel was getting open early and got off well. We handled the basketball real well, we took care of it and I think that became the outcome of the game, we took care of the basketball."

Wilson added 14 points to the mix while Gary Puto had nine, all on 3-pointers in the first quarter. Five other players scored for Windber, showing the depth that Conemaugh Township was not able to answer.

"When we scouted them, we saw they only went six deep and we saw they got tired," Charney said. "So we pushed the ball up the floor, we pressed and we went deeper than they did so we were able to tire them out."

Conemaugh Township's 44 points was the team's lowest output since scoring 41 in a season-opening loss to Berlin.

Ben Watkins led the Indians (13-4, 5-2) with a game-high 16 points, including four from beyond the arc and four blocked shots.

Andy Byer finished with only "14" points and was hounded throughout by a stiff Windber defense that kept the Conemaugh Township offense seemingly out-of-sync from the start. Toby McIlwain added 10 points for Conemaugh Township.

"We had our chances," Indians coach Scott Cable said. "Andy didn't have his best game, and when you're playing 24 games, sometimes you're not going to have your best game. But that means somebody else has to step up. Ben shot the ball and got his points, but we didn't have somebody step up. Toby hit some buckets and that helped but we needed somebody to step up too, and we just didn't get that."
