Somerset County stars shine in Chupek Classic.....

CAIRNBROOK - Somerset County's basketball community gathered Monday night at Shade-Central City Elementary School for the 18th annual Chupek All-Star Classic.

It was an opportunity for many of the county's top senior hoopsters to play one last time on the hardwood to end their respective careers while raising funds for the Spinal Cord Society.

"It's for a good cause and you get to play one more basketball game for our fans," Conemaugh Township's Ben Watkins said. "It was fun and in an all-star game, everybody was supposed to be relaxed. It was really different playing with some of these guys. During the season, they are almost like your enemies and now they are your friends and you can build relationships with people that you wouldn't normally get to."

In the girls game, the South won 57-34 while the North pulled away in the second half to claim top honors in the boys contest, 56-43. In the Geezer Game, the Red team edged the Yellow, 86-84.

Numbers were down slightly in the girls game with just 11 players on the floor. The South team, with just five players, sprinted out to an early lead and never let up.

"It was a lot of fun because over the years you play against these girls and you rough them

up under there and now you get a chance to play with them and see how what their real personalities are like off the basketball court," said the South's Kayla Zambanini of Conemaugh Township. "It's a lot of fun getting to know these people. I also get to redeem myself because a lot of people think I'm real nasty on the court. I'd say to other girls: Don't pass it up, no matter what. It's a blast."

Somerset's Amber Kister topped all scorers with 24 points and also pulled down 17 rebounds for the South. Sarah King of Rockwood added 16 points and 17 rebounds with Shade's Danielle Zubek supplying nine points and nine boards. For the North girls, April Trexel of North Star had 18 points.

The North boys were paced by 11 points each from Watkins and North Star's John Hornick while Cougars teammate Josh Ryan added 10 points. Windber's Frank Rummel and North Star's Nick Mignogna each supplied eight points.

Abe Miller of Shanksville-Stonycreek paced the South squad with nine points while Brad Shutack of Shade and John Abramowich of the Vikings chipped in with eight points apiece.

Former Windber players Gary Burke, now the coach at Lakeview High School in District #10, and his twin brother Greg, the Ramblers junior high coach, were at the helm of the victorious North boys squad.

"To come back to participate in something that's very important to the community and to the area, it makes it that much better that my brother is here with me and able to share this experience," Gary Burke said.

The Best of the Best all-stars in the girls game, as selected by the players are: King, Zubek, Kister, Trexel and Conemaugh Township's Holly Muir. The boys' Best of the Best are: Watkins, Mignogna, Abramowich, Rummel and Shutack.

Scholarships for top fund-raisers went to Shutack, Zubek and Somerset's Amber Tinkey.

Shade graduates Abby Leonard and Jon Yock were inducted into the Somerset County Hall of Fame between the boys and girls games.
