W.P.I.A.L. Girls top basketball performers of the Year
2005 W.P.I.A.L.Sports Girls All-Netters ....
3/31/2005 -
Oakland Catholic represented the WPIAL well in the P.I.A.A. playoffs, winning five games by an average of 21.2 points. Now, Oakland Catholic is represented well on the All-Netters all-star teams. Oakland Catholic has two players on the first team and one on the second. That's three Eagles among the top "10" players.
Here is a look at the players on the two all-star teams:
FIRST TEAM:
EVE PYLE - OAKLAND CATHOLIC
Pyle, a 6-foot senior forward, did a little of everything for the Eagles.
She led the team in scoring with a 16.1 average. She also was the team leader in rebounds at 8.9.
What also was impressive was her shooting ability. She led Oakland Catholic in 3-pointers with 39.
"She was our most consistent player this year," said Oakland Catholic coach Rich Irr.
Pyle was a four-year starter for Oakland Catholic and finished with more than 1,600 careeer points. She is one of three Division I college recruits for the Eagles.
She has signed with Miami, Ohio, of the Mid-American Conference.
DANIELLE GRATTON - BETHEL PARK
Gratton was much like Pyle in terms of versatility.
Gratton, a 6-foot-1 senior guard-forward, led the Black Hawks in scoring with a 15.5 average. She also averaged 8.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 3.1 assists. She also led the
team in blcoked with 41 and made 21 of 64 3-point shots.
Gratton was the main reason Bethel Park made it to the WPIAL Class (AAAA) championship for the first time in school history.
She finished her career with 1,122 points and she will play in the Big Ten Conference next season at Illinois.
KELLI COSTA - AVONWORTH
Avonworth won the WPIAL Class AA championship with a perfect 23-0 record and Costa was the one who made the Antelopes jump.
A 5-8 senior guard, Costa led the Antelopes with a 17.1 average and also led the team in rebounds and assists.
Avonworth was knocked out of the PIAA playoffs in the second round by Westmont Hilltop and Costa finished her career with a school-record 1,563 points.
Her college future is uncertain, but wants to be an orthopedic surgeon.
She has a 4.2 grade-point average.
LAURA GRIMM - SERRA CATHOLIC
The bad news for the rest of the Class (A) teams in the state is Grimm has one more year left at Serra.
Grimm, a 5-7 guard, had a superb junior season, leading the Eagles to WPIAL and PIAA Class (A) championships.
They were only the third WPIAL team to win a PIAA title. She averaged a team-high 19.2 points.
Grimm has 1,394 career points.
BRIANNE O'ROURKE - OAKLAND CATHOLIC
O'Rourke might be Penn State's point guard of the future.
She signed with the Nittany Lions last November.
O'Rourke, a 5-foot-6 senior, bounced back after missing her entire junior season with a knee injury.
She averaged 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.6 steals a game.
O'Rourke was a four-year member of the varsity.
SECOND TEAM:
RACHEL FREDERICK - NORTH CATHOLIC
Frederick, a four-year starter, finished her career as the school's second all-time leading scorer with 1,750 points.
This season, Frederick averaged 21.3 points,, 9 rebounds and 3.8 steals. She was a good 3-point shooter, making 34.2 percent (40 of 117). She also was excellent at the free-throw line, making 84 percent (125 of 151). Frederick signed with Ohio University in November.
SARAH BUCAR - OAKLAND CATHOLIC
Bucar is the third Oakland Catholic player on the All-Netters squad. Pyle and O'Rourke were first-team selections.
Bucar, a 5-7 senior guard, averaged only 7 points a game for Oakland Catholic, but did a lot of things that didn't show up in box scores. She usually guarded the other team's top player. Bucar will play next season at West Virginia.
AMY JOHNS - McKEESPORT
Johns, a 5-7 junior guard, led the WPIAL in scoring with a 30.9 average. Coaches in WPIAL Class AAAA Section 2 voted her the No. 2 player in the section behind Oakland Catholic's Eve Pyle. Johns is a Division I prospect for next season.
JALEESA SAMS - NEW CASTLE
Sams, a 5-10 forward, has been a starter since her freshman year and helped the Red Hurricanes to the WPIAL Quarterfinals this season. She averaged 17.3 points a game.
LIZ MARTIN - MOON
Moon had a well-balanced scoring attack this season and sometimes didn't score many points. But Martin, a 5-4 guard, was a talented player in many facets of the game and helped the Tigers win the WPIAL Class (AAA) championship. She averaged 11.5 points.
