not only a urine test... make them actually do work. clean the streets, paint something, work in a soup kitchen, do something! i don't understand how coming to the government with your hand out gets you money. makes no sense.

i actually had a discussion with a buddy of mine the other day about bringing back slavery. not the racial kind, but for the people living on the streets and the people that can't get work. what's wrong with sending them to a farm or something to work as long as the farmer provides them with food, clothes, and housing. better than living on the streets isn't it?

It's easy to say that welfare recipients should do work, but who is going to look after their kids while they are working? If day care is supplied while the parent works, that would be great, albeit costly. Around 85% of women on welfare are single (never married, divorced or separated). By the way, less than 20% of welfare recipients are on it for 5 or more years. Roughly 55% are on the welfare payroll for 2 years or less. Welfare is not a perfect system and there are some who abuse the system. Most of the recipients use the program for what it is intended... a chance to get on their feet and support their families in the process.

OAR...slavery would solve all of that.

let's not call it slavery though... let's go with indentured servant.

I'm not talking eugenics here but what riles me are the single women who have 6 kids to like five different men and are on welfare, WIC, food stamps, and every other hand out gov't program you can imagne. This is really bad in the inner cities but we have it here too. Number one the dead beat dads need to be held accountable and support their kids. Number two any single mother getting public assistance should be on mandatory birth control! The Depo shot not the pill so we know there won't be any "fogetfulness".

Count nice idea in theory on "indentured servitude" but I feel that most on welfare wouldn't last more than two hours in a haymow or through one milking and wouldn't even try forking manure. I for one wouldn't put up with the whining and complaining!

Great posts on this thread but you guys realize that it would be totally unfair to make this people who receive welfare work for it. How can you folks be so heartless and greedy when this poor people have so little---like big screen televisions, blackberry cell phones and nice sneakers than I do. dang Bush lol
