Haven't been down 403 towards Dilltown for a loooong time, but there used to be some riverwall graffiti between Coopersdale homes and the turn towards Dishong Mtn. Rd. taken from the Simon & Garfunkel song: "nuthin' but the DEAD are dying here in our little town". When locals can't run businesses profitably, they always either go bankrupt, or look for 'the government' to somehow help them out. Murtha was fortunate enough to get on the right defense committees, and ascended their ranks to where he could take advantage of his clout with the demise of the steel mills and the mines, and bring in pork to 'feed the locals'. CTC, Martin-Baker, Lockheed-Martin, Northrop-Grumman, Kuchera, DRS, the list can go on. All defense contractors. What happens when (God forbid) the "WAR" is over? What happens to these companies then? What happens when someone eventually lays the smackdown on Murtha in an election and he's ( thank God) gone? It will probably get worse around here before it even THINKS about getting better. A friend who is a trucker who had shoulder surgery and then got laid off recently stated that he can collect unemployment now for 78 weeks. Amazing. Who pays for that? Those three of us out of every hundred that still have a job, that's who.

The headquarters of Murtech, in a low-slung, bland building in a Glen Burnie business park, has its blinds drawn tight and few signs of life. On several days of visits, a handful of cars sit in the parking lot, and no trucks arrive at the 10 loading bays at the back of the building.

Yet last year, Murtech received $4 million in Pentagon work, all of it without competition, for a variety of warehousing and engineering services. With its long corridor of sparsely occupied offices and an unmanned reception area, Murtech's most striking feature is its owner -- Robert C. Murtha Jr., 49. He is the nephew of Rep. John P. Murtha, the Pennsylvania Democrat who has significant sway over the Defense Department's spending as chairman of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee.

I dont know if he cares about the city or his legacy. Or some of his buddies. Cause that is were a lot of the incoming funds are going. Or to his nephew down in Maryland. But I digress, I agree the only thing holding Jtown up is Murtha, and when he goes, its gonna be a big flushing sound. While User put it much nicer, Im not a Murtha fan in the least bit, but he is keeping Jtown afloat.
