The problem with making any statements about PSU is they have not played anyone.

Maybe their o-line issues are solved. But how do we know? If they aren't (or possibly even if they are), OSU's d-line will destroy them.

Maybe their receivers are decent. But how do we know? They did nothing against Iowa after that first play. Again, we will find out later.

You talked about their Safeties being a problem. I am not sold on their d-line and LB's being as good as advertised. I know that Lee did not play against Iowa, but the Hawkeyes ran for nearly 163 yards in that game at 4.5 ypc. You can't blame safeties for that.

I think PSU's whole defense is suspect. They have not played a decent offensive team this year. Iowa is not a great offense, yet they moved the ball consistently against PSU's defense. Yes, it was raining, but Iowa's offense had to play in the same rain, their QB had the same trouble. So why couldn't PSU stop the run if their front seven is so good?

Certainly, Iowa would do no worse than being down 31-7 at the half.

If you are comparing this defense to last years, lets take a look.

Maybin left early. Gaines and Evans were decent at best. Certainly Crawford and Lattimore are not as productive as Maybin right now, but they're both better than Evans and Gaines in 2008.

Odrick returned, Ogbu is doing fine.

Bowman looks like he is back in top form for the 1st time this season. Hull is much better. Lee is banged up, but even a banged up Stupar/Lee is better than Sales.

I never liked Sargent. Wallace and Timmons are much improved, but the real story here is the physicality of Lynn and Morris. We upgraded here.

Only problem, right now, between 08 and 09, is coverage technique. In run suppoort, Sukay and Astorino are doing fine. They are not as good as Scirrotto and Rubin in passing situations. Watch this weekend when Minnesota dumps Decker behind Hull and in front of the Safeties.


I'm not sure what you've seen to think this defense is suspect, and I'm not sure why you're so convinced OSU's d-line will "destroy" them. Ohio State isn't a world beater, Wildcat. I've seen PSU, Iowa, and OSU many times this season and don't really see how they can't make adjustments. I also do not understand how every team, in the eyes of this website, is capable of making personnel adjustments except Penn State. In fact, from what I have seen, PSU is absolutely the 1st or 2nd best team in this conference, and its not just based on who they played.
