Wpial football is always some of the best football in the state. Wpial basketball...not so much.

I agree that WPIAL basketball is not very strong...except in class AA, where there are a million teams.

With thats said, WPIAL basketball is much better than D6 or D5, which is some of the weakest boys' basketball in PA.

Overall, the quality of boys' basketball west of the Turnpike tunnels is abysmal.

Also, of course WPIAL is better. District 5 and 6 combined has 70 schools. The WPIAL has 130 schools.

Districts 8 (Pgh) and 12 (Philly), as well as the Phila Catholic League have MUCH fewer than 70 schools. Does that mean District 6, who has 70 schools, is better than these districts??

Given this fact, your assumption that "more is better" is unsubstantiated.

I can see it now and so suprised that no one has brought up Dis 12 yet. Besides single a district 12 has the top 3 spots. So I really think all of this arguing will last a couple more weeks then we will all shift the bitching to dis 12.

Titan, you like to put words in other peoples mouth to make you sound good, but I see right through you. You cant really think I would assume that about the east and west. I can think of a few other reasons why the east is the best in the state starting with charters and the ability to transfer from one school to another more easily than here. To answer your question, "assuming" things are more equal in the west, then yes more is better. Most often a school that graduates 800 kids is going to be better than a school that graduates 45 kids.

Jtown, Talk about spinning things...read your last two posts. Jtown may be a good AAA team in D6, but use caution in saying this because competition is relative. Remember, Jtown still lost to the worst Altoona team in recent memory, and didn't exactly blow out teams like Westmont and McCort.

I have seen Johnstown play many times this year and they are a good team. I think they will compete for D6 AAA championship. I do not think they can beat a 3-6 team or a 7-2 team this year.

Jtown should definitely be a favorite in 6AAA, but don't count out teams like Tyrone, Central, Indian Valley, Lewistown, Bellefonte, Huntingdon, and even Forest Hills with their two "stars" (even though they lost to PC last night, which surprised me.)

It also goes without saying that Jtown typically plays crazy (lots of athleticism and talent, but little discipline and patience), which can be be a blessing or a curse and could serve them well, or lead to an early out.

The 7-2 team in PIAAs will likely be good, and much more battle tested than Jtown or the others from 6AAA...Char Valley, Hampton, and Hopewell are all much better and more talented teams than Jtown. Center, Blackhawk, Highlands, and Greensburg Salem are also noteworthy.

However, WPIAL AAA has a few good teams, but isn't real strong top to bottom.

I will say this, district 5 boys basketball in single "A" is pretty good, I definitely wouldn't say abysmal.Look at the playoffs last year all 3 teams won first round games.Also let's not forget district 6 girls bball as solid as anywhere in the state!
