Once they created an all state team for EACH classification, the importance of the all-state team went downhill fast. Until 1968, there were only 11 guys on the all-state first team, 33 if you include 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams. Then until 1987, you double the number of all-state players because they added an all-state defensive team and an all-state offensive team. That became 66 all-state players. THEN, that figure doubled in 1988 when they had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd all-state Big School and Small School offensive and defensive teams. That became 132 all-state players each and every year. AND NOW (as of 2002)...you got offensive and defensive 1st, 2nd, 3rd all-state teams for A,AA,AAA, and AAAA. Throw in some kickers, punters and specialists (what the hell is a specialist anyway) and you get a grand total of OVER 264 all-state players. IS THIS A JOKE OR WHAT??????? Someone on another topic said we should not be negative of players on this site. How can we be when EVERY player can be considered for an all-state team????? UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!

According to the PIAA website there are 588 schools that compete in football.

For the sake of this argument lets say there is an average of 35 boys on each team. (I bet that is way low but whatever.)

20,580 kids hat play football

If 264 kids are all state that is about 1.2% of students that achieve all-state status.

How can you say it is a joke when only 1.2% of players are all-state? If that is too watered down what percentage of players would be sufficient?

Moldy says prior to 1968 there were only 33 all staters. How many kids played then as opposed to now? I bet the percentages are the same.

Let's look at it this way. There are 588 schools that play football in Pennsylvania. Is there EVER more than ONE potential all-state player on a team? Rarely. And I mean rarely. More often, teams DO NOT have a potential all-state player on their roster. So let's say that each of the 588 schools has ONE potential legitimate all-state player. That's 588 kids. We now give out over 264 all-state awards. This means that 45% of the better players in the state make the all-state team. WOW!!! That's quite a percentage, isn't it?

You can interpret the numbers however you want. The fact is 1.2% (if my numbers I used are correct) are all-state. Doesn't sound watered down to me.

What percentage of kids made all state in 1968? Wanna bet it was more than 1.2%?

You really think it is rare to have more than one legit all-state player on a team? Are you kidding me? Teams every year in the WPIAL, PCL, district 1, district 3 etc have multiple D1 players on their team. I suppose they are not legit all-state players.

For every team that has more than one POTENTIAL all-state player, there are 20 Ferndales out there WHO HAVE NONE!!!! Look. You're grouping EVERY kid who dresses for a game with those who have the potential to make all-state. That's like grouping every student in high school with those who have the potential to get a free academic scholarship to Harvard. Tell me. How many kids from PA get full rides for football every year? About 50? 75 maybe? Isn't it sad that only 50 or so out of 264 all-state players get full rides to college. How many all-state players don't even get picked up by a college? I'll bet those 3rd team all-state kids from Portage are really sought after. You are giving out awards to average players, just to fill out a quota. And WHO selects these kids? That's even a joke. Hell, the Johnstown Tribune has difficulty selecting the all-area team from 26 schools, let alone those who select players from all over the state. Unbelieveable.

1.2% of kids that play hs football get rewarded with all-state honors. You can rationalize anything you want. The facts are the facts.

You said ,how often is there more than 1 person on a team that deserves all-state honors. I gave you examples, and that wasn't good enough for you, as usual.

You won't be totally satisfied until everyone is as miserable as you are.

And I also gave YOU examples of teams with ABSOLUTELY NO chance of having an all-state player. None what so ever. Lumping 135 pound 10th graders (who dress for varsity games and have NO potential to make the all-state team) into your sample is a joke too. But YOU, never-the-less, include them in your sample of over 20,000 high school players. Your entire thought process is skewed. Nice try though.

El-moldo... Mr Rationalize. 1.2% is the facts. Hard to argue facts. Ive seen many underclassmen make all-state but why should facts get in the way of your argument.

1.2%, you know, about 1% higher than you ever getting some. Just curious, do you go to the wrestling or basketball games and stand in the corner and throw racial slurs at those games too or is it just the football games?
