It's based on number of teams in the district. When Tussey Mt. and Northern Bedford moved to AA District 5 lost the 3rd spot. Next year in AA girls Conemaugh Township and Northern Bedford are dropping back to A so District 5 loses the AA play in game.

I did not see the SF/Berlin game. I had a prior commitment that night and did not get to go to the game. I did hear though from numerous people that Berlin shot the lights out. They were like 9 of 17 or so from beyond the arc and shot over 50% for the game overall. People I talked to said SF did not play terribly, but that Berlin just shot extremly well. That is why they play the game and why anyone can win on any given night. I guess thats a tough lesson that the SF boys team learned when they played Berlin that one great night by one team could end your season because its win or go home come playoff time.

Since NBC and CT are moving down to A next year will that allow the girls to get 3 teams in again in single A? And with the addition of SF to AA in boys will that change the number of teams that get into the state tournament or at least take the D5-AA 2nd place team from playing in a play-in game on Tuesday night next year and getting to open up play with everyone else on Saturday instead?

A Girls still only get 2 teams to advance next year.

I'm not sure about AA boys. Southern Fulton is moving to AA and Westinghouse from District 8 will also be joining the District 5 AA tournament.

In 2013 the "Play-In" games will be eliminated. These began as neutral site games meant to give the districts with few teams and only one automatic qualifier a chance to get their 2nd place team into the tournament (expl: 6-AAAA and 5-AA) by playing the lowest seeded automatic qualifiers in the piaa proportionate qualifiers (based on numbers) system. These games moved to home site of the natural automatic qualifier the last couple years and now are being eliminated altogether.

With several classification changes and District 8 having just one AA team next year, the current plan is to have 5 & 8 subregionalized. This dramatically helps 5-AA boys because it gets us a second spot. With SFulton moving up their will be 9 teams eligibile...the format has yet to be determined.

With CT and NB moving down to "A" in girls, 5-AA will only get one spot but I believe D5 will get a #3 spot in "A" girls again. Boys A will still be at 2.

i guess its the same reason somerset plays in d6 for basketball after coming back to d5 being the only AAA team in the district they play lhac teams that are much bigger then our little d5 schools

Thanks for the info guys. With their going to be 9 teams in AA boys will District 5 still only take the top 6 teams like they have been doing with the top 2 seeds getting byes to the semi's or will they let 8 in like they do in Single A? I guess another factor would be if any team under the 6th seed is above .500 because if I am not mistaking if you are at least .500 you make the playoffs? Anyone have any knowledge of how this will work?

Just checked out Westinghouse on maxpreps. They had a losing record this season, but they were a AAA school playing some stiff competition from Pittsburgh. Also they lost to Quaker Valley bye 20. Thats the team that ridge plays tonight in state play-in game.
