Re: States
I still don't see anyone from D5 or D6 finishing higher than 3rd at the end of the year.

Re: States
I think Maines has the best chance to prove me wrong and I hope I am wrong. I would like to see D5 and D6 have a great showing at states but my gut tells me that 3rd is the highest anyone will place. I'm no expert and anyone who saw my prediction of CR and Berlin can tell you that. I'm not saying that they can't finish 1st or 2nd, I just don't think they will.

Off the Mat Rankings 1/20/14
Here are the rankings from last year this time. Its listed as -wrestler, grade in school, school, district, where they actually finished at states and the difference between the ranking (as of January 20th 2014) and the final ranking at states. Places are 1-8, (Rd of 12) is 9-12, (Rd of 16) is 13-16. So for example. Nolan Link was ranked 12th and he finished in the round of 16 so I gave that a -1, since rankings 13-16 are not decided I give the benefit of the doubt and call it 13th place. So he finished one place lower than he was ranked. I could not find what happened to one wrestler and one was injured. Of all the wrestlers listed, only one finished where they were ranked on Jan. 20th. Two wrestlers moved weight classes, so I did not rate there rankings. One wrestler did not make it to states or regionals so its not realistic to rate him either but something tells me he will be there this year. The biggest difference in ranking to placing was a 9 spot drop and the second biggest was a 8 spot advance. My point is, rankings are fun to look at and talk about but when it comes down to it they don’t really mean a whole lot unless you are a returning state champ. I wish all the D5 and D6 wrestlers the best when it comes time for regionals and states.( If any mistakes are found, I apologize ahead of time).

And I think Conner Buttry is a "+5" (rather than "-5")

Re: States
I'm not seeing a big problem...38 ranked top 16 wrestlers, 29 of whom qualified...though with that said, Hunter Connor was a big swing and a miss.
Many variables with rankings such as:
A) Wrestlers performing differently in Feb/Mar then in Dec/Jan
B) Wrestlers changing weights
C) Regional qualifier not necessary designed to get the top 5 to qualify in the proper order.
D) Regions having more or less qualifying spots in the top 16 (for 2014 it was 5)...less of a problem for 2015 with 20 qualifiers and only 16 ranked.
E) Hershey placings not necessarily the accurate order of quality of wrestlers.
D) 7 SW regional 285s were ranked in the top 16...only a max of 5 of them were going to get through
PIAA Placements Wt/1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8
106 SE5/SE1/NE1/SE3/SW1/SW4/SE2/NW1
113 SE1/SW4/NW1/NW3/SW5/SW2/NW2/NE2
120 SE1/NE1/SW1/SE2/SW2/NE2/SE3/NW2

195 SE1/NW1/NE1/SW3/NE2/SE2/SW2/SE4
220 SW1/SW2/SE1/NW3/SW3/NW2/NW3/SE3
285 NW1/SE1/SW1/SW4/SW2/SW5/SE2/NW3
Somehow NE PA was weak last year...no state champs, no 3rd place finishers placed top 8, only 18 placers instead of 21 based on percentages...though in prior years I'd guess that NE region matched or exceeded expectations. Plenty of schools have minimal outside of region matchups, adding another layer to ranking difficulties.

Re: States
If a wrestler comes into regionals (or even states in some cases) undefeated you would think that they are probably top 5 in the state and they are usually ranked as such. The thing is they might not have wrestled as tough a schedule as a guy who is 30-3 but wrestled more quality opponents. This seems to happen every year. Quality of wins (to me) means more than wrestling a weaker schedule and going undefeated. This is why I think we see guys ranked in the top 5 all year but when its all over they end up in the Round of 16.
