Do u think another QB on the roster would be a better option this season? Not sure there is another 1st rounder carrying a clipboard.

1st rounder?..... If any of the QB's play at next level, whoever calls plays and coaches QB's over there should be canned. Because I certainly don't see it. Don't get mad. That's my opinion.
Everyone destroyed Joe's choice of Jay, McQueery, and the guy after Ganter, because they didn't get recruits.... They may not have, but did more with less. Last 2 staffs have recruited better even with sanctions....,, I don't see a drastic improvement in end product, or even any improvement for that matter.(not talking win/loss) I'm talking polished players. It's a small sample size, but I'm not a fan at all of the offense or the actual play calls... It's pop warner-ish(11-13 yr old league not the original coach)

Didn't get recruits? Penn State has always recruited well no matter who was the coach. Even Paterno's last class was rated in the top 10 until the scandal hit and they all took off. They had several 5* QBs and high 4* qbs. One of the biggest knocks on Paterno and his staff is they recruited great Qb's that never lived up to expectations. Zach Wasserman, Pat Devlin, Robert Bolden, Kevin Newsome, and Paul Jones were all high 4*. Anthony Morelli was a 5* and rated the best qb in the country. All of those guys never lived up to anywhere near expectations. I thought Hackenberg was by far the best QB on the field yesterday and it wasn't even close. He completed all the easy throws he should, he worked through his progressions and found open receivers. When it wasn't there he usually scrambled or threw it away. He made two bad throws that should have been picked off and one was. He took a shot at a deep pass when he was scrambling out of the pocket to the left and the DB tipped it away but I thought it was a good risk to take. Half of his incompletions came in the second half when he was throwing to backups and walk ons like Garrity where they didn't seem to be on the same page. I'm not sure why Hack was in at that point. I think he's going to have a monster season. I'll say 27 TD's 14 interceptions and 3,400 yards.

Hack did quite well his FR season in a prostyle offense under BOB. He's not Franklins guy and does not fit Franklins offense but that was one season so I'm taking the wait and see approach. One AFC scout was just quoted in the Sporting News when asked to compare the potential at the next level between Hack and this years top 2 (Winston/Mariota) and he said its an easy answer "It's Hackenberg and frankly, it's not even close."
You can't say the old coaches did more with less when they had full allotment of scholarships and players. They weren't asking FR to come in and contribute right away the way Hamilton, Blacknall, Allen, Campbell, Cabinda, and several others did just last year.

Was that "AFC Scout" a member of the Browns organization?

Well the Browns are usually lock for a top 5 pick. So that might be a good sign for Hack.

Oh I agree...Geno Smith, Mark Sanchez, Blaine Gabbert, Manziel, etc.. Was just putting it out there cuz I don't think you can put his struggles last year directly on him especially after what he did as a FR.

No you can't, he hasn't been blessed with the talent that Mariota/Winston have surrounding them either

The jury is still out on Hackenberg. There is no doubt he has all the tools to be a great QB, but so far the production has never met the talent level(even in high school). He reminds me an awful lot of Jay Cutler as a QB. He will make scouts drool with his talent but still makes a lot of head scratching throws on simple passes like a quick out or slant where he throws them into the feet of the receiver.

With that said, the sanctions are a reality. They were designed to hurt the team in areas and last year was the year it was going to cause the biggest effect. BIll O'Brien decided to recruit as many playmakers as possible with his 15 recruits a year and ignore the OLine, because he knew he would be long gone by the time linemen were needed. That has played out and we are now in the years where lineman recruited would be redshirt juniors or seniors and Penn State has none of that. Instead, they are using guys who are not at the strength or experience level to make a difference. The line will still struggle this year. It's not going to turn around over night, but each year it will get better. Hack just won't be around to experience that.

As for Jay, Galen, and Big Red, they would have had Hackenburg in the shotgun running up the middle, around the end, then throwing when it was 3rd and 9. They had no excuses because they have never had to deal with anything close to what the sanctions have done. Luckily, Michael Robinson and Daryl Clark were so talented that they could make plays out of nothing and saved them a few good years.
