If the athlete is trying to play two sports at once I feel the priority must lie in the school sport that is in season. Specialization is ruining athlete's and school athletics with the belief that every kid can earn a scholarship if they just do one sport year round. Truth is very few earn scholarships. And most that do are multi sport.

Athletes that specialize open themselves to more sports related injuries and often shorten their longevity.

konjo78 wrote:You play the sport where you have the best chance to get a scholarship. Crimson is wrong, most coaches in colleges that aren't football coaches want 0 of their future players in football. Way too easy for them to get injured and lose a solid chance at the next level
type the following in your bar and hit enter: "do college coaches like multi sport athletes"...........you will find out how wrong you are.

A lot of kids in high school, regardless of the classification, play in 3 different sports depending on the season. The question comes into play when a certain special athlete is good enough to be participating in one sport that extends beyond the normal length of season, and until cloning is perfected or a teleporter is invented, can't possibly be in 2 places at once, so he must choose. In this case, the choice is for the sport he is probably going to play at the next level. You go, AC. :ymapplause:

Ive talked to multiple coaches and players about this very topic. do coaches like seeing athletes who can play different sports? Yes. But when they ready to offer an athlete a scholarship in 1 sport they want that kid to stop playing the other. In fact most of the scholarship athletes that i've talked to over the years are asked by the programs to just become the 1 sport athlete so your body is used to that sport going into college.

If they have an offer for baseball then i have no problem with the kid playing just that sport. However if his parents or the kid thinks that just focusing on the sport will get him an offer then maybe he should look at playing other sports in that season and have fun. There are too many kids that are having smoke blown their way about just focusing on 1 sport, they are the best and will get a full ride at the next level. Its high school, play as many sports as you want and have fun with your friends

I agree. While there is being a good bit of smoke blown around, I just think this generation of parents collectively are NUTS and obsessed with GLORY! Bottom line is that the kids who get the scholarships are those who are the best athletes, period. Look at any big time college or pro sport and the "typical" athlete is cut from the same mold. No 5'9" or 5'10" 170 pounders in any sport but a helluva lot of them in travel sports. The parents just don't get that and are willing to spend the $$$ so...........

And btw, specialization is a result of the fact that every kid is a multi-sport athlete... in first grade. Kids specialize (ahem, burnout) when they get to Jr high! FRIGGING NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But hey, go ahead, and make your 9 yr old kid put on pads and go at it three days a week and see how many stick around until high school. More evidence is that there are more travel basketball leagues in this area than any other sport, and just look at the litany of college hoopsters from Western PA.

I think there was a Bedford QB a couple years ago faced with the same question, and he chose Travel Baseball.
