How about surprise teams. Anyone out there that might jump up and make an impact that we have not mentioned? Not saying going to win district title but might will be in the mix.
Re: Girls Basket Ball
Reading through the thread, many have been mentioned. I still haven't read or heard much of what is going on in the heritage conference. It seems like everyone is more knowledgeable on the LH and WestPac.districtsixhoops wrote:How about surprise teams. Anyone out there that might jump up and make an impact that we have not mentioned? I don't think discussing the favorites in each class as coming up with surprise teams. Was just looking for some that haven't been talked about that anyone thinks will make some noise. As far as the Heritage goes I see it as a three team race. Blairsville, HC and MC. MC returns starting lineup and HC returns what was some good freshman and sophomores who are now sophs and juniors. Blairsville is going to look much different but I have seen them play over the off season and they are still very good. Smaller and quicker. I'm still taking Blairsville until someone shows they can knock them off.
Re: Girls Basket Ball
Wow...That is very interesting about the heritage. I thought Bville lost everyone. They were tough last year, but were all seniors. Seems like a lot of young teams. I saw Homer play Tussey and BG last year and they were average at best. I didn't think they would be in the mix, but maybe that sleeper team you were talking about. I know nothing about MC. I don't remember any other Heritage Teams in playoffs last year.

Re: Girls Basket Ball
HC will struggle again come playoff time. Blairsville has been the only team in that confernce that has gone outside of Heritage and played some quality teams. HC does not see anyone close to BG during the season and will struggle againt them Portage and JV when it gets playoff time. They will go through their season with only a handful of losses. MC, after one down year (for them) should be back in AA playoff picture. I think they could have gone last year, not sure why they didn't.

Homer Center had that Tussey team beat last year in the regular season and let it slip away. With a lot of players returning they will be a force... Not sure how many of you watched BG and Homer Last year, but Homer had that great BG team on the ropes the entire first half. Homer was a better team last year than Portage who made it to the state semis... (East bracket I know, but still) They lost one key senior, but they return everyone else and get a couple nice players back from injuries. Now that they have some experience look for them to improve this year.
Blairsville lost a lot but they will still be very good. They didn't lose everything like many have tried to say. They return Rena Enterline who was their third best player last year as a freshman. She is a very good player on both ends of the floor. They have a couple other girls that contributed to last years' run returning as well.
Marion Center will return everyone from last year. They lost some close games last year and finished with a .500 record, but at the time playoff applications were due they were below .500... They have a balanced veteran team. They have good size and skill inside to go along with a quality point guard.
Any of those three could finish at the top...

Awesome, thanks ChrisKentRam
Re: Girls Basket Ball
I disagree with the assessment of Homer. Yes, they had Tussey beat, but both teams were average at best (in that game). It was sloppy and showed very little skill on both teams. Plus Homer's coach made some questionable changes in that game that contributed to that loss. In the BG game, it was a close the first quarter, not half. If you saw that game, Homer also had many "lucky" plays and calls that went their way...and Benzel had her way with them on both ends of the court. She alone beat them! You can not play zone against BG, so again coach did not do homework. I disagree with Homer being a better team than Portage. Portage had way more skilled players and are well coached. You can argue that the east side of the bracket was weak, but BC, BG, Blairsville, and Yes, Portage were still better than Homer. Now, again I only saw them play twice, so maybe they played more skilled against other opponents. I would agree that they were young....can't really dispute age.... and will have a couple nice players returning. Yes, I agree they will be improved this year, but can they compete out of conference?ChrisKentRam wrote:Homer Center had that Tussey team beat last year in the regular season and let it slip away. Re: Girls Basket Ball
I don't mean to discredit everything you just said... However, Homer Center led the game 15-10 after one quarter. BG led at half time 27-24... Yes, I had to look those exact scores up, but I was at the game, I remember what I saw, and I remember that it was a close game at the half. Clearly one of us recalls that game a little better than the other... If your assessment is true of both teams being average in the Tussey vs. Homer game then what happens when both teams are playing well? Sounds like Homer would be a pretty good team, no? Also sometimes when a good team plays another good team (Especially at a Christmas Tournament when kids are out of a routine) they make each other look bad at times. They are kids, they are human... I do agree with you about the coaching aspect though... Had Homer not made some questionable coaching decisions in the 4th quarter of that Tussey Game they would have won. However, when accessing a team for the upcoming season I am looking at the players they have, not a coach's decision in one game in the past. Homer vs. Portage argument is irrelevant... It's my opinion vs yours, and there is no way to tell a difference. My honest opinion is if those teams would have played 10 times it would be an even split or 6/4 split on way or another... Truthfully I just made that comment since there are so many Portage fans on here. I was hoping to get some more action in this forum. Hoops season is just around the corner! Can't Wait!Icoach wrote:I disagree with the assessment of Homer. Yes, they had Tussey beat, but both teams were average at best (in that game). Re: Girls Basket Ball
Discredit by score only....can we agree that score can be misleading. Yes, I agree Homer played tough in the first quarter and maybe even a minute into the second quarter (not the entire half, sorry) BG started to take over the second quarter and was up by more than three, but like I said a few plays went Homer's way....Homer only scored 9 points in the second quarter and really started to break down defensively. BG owned them in second half. I bet Benzel scored over 30 on them alone and Homer only scored a total of 45 points. As for Tussey game, I agree what you say about the play of the two teams....I just thought in that game, both teams were not playing like top teams....I only saw Homer play twice.....perhaps that was not how they typically play (as you said Christmas tourney). Portage....ehhhhhh....you stirring the pot lol! Maybe Homer and Portage will meet this year?
