Saint Francis has been pretty good relative to the NEC lately. 

He's a solid player. But I think Brandon Martinazzi was much better and wasn't offered a full ride by SFU

The game has changed a lot over the last several years. Teams spread the floor and rarely use a "true" center anymore. Coaches want guys who can move without the ball and spread the floor, drive and knock down the open shot. IUP who is a national power in hoops uses a 6'6 player as it's center. At the D2 level that is the average height for a 5 player. As long as he can hit the 15' consistently he will be a solid contributor someday at UPJ. Martinazziti (sp) was a great player and he could take a game over with his game but what hurt him was genetics. 5'10 is tough to make a D1 squad when there are 6'3 point guards just as good. I am not taking anything away from him. I loved watching him play a few times and was very impressed with him and glad that he has been able to continue his academic and basketball career.

There are 6'3" guards and such in Division One, but once you get down to NEC level like Saint Francis, you can get away with being 5'10'.

SFU made their conference title game last season, and they started three guards 6'1" or smaller. They played Mount St. Mary's and their starting guards were 5'5" and 6'0".


Not necessarily comparing their skills, just saying you can play small division one basketball and be on the small side. But two things.

1. You have to be quick
And/Or
2. You have to be able to shoot 3's.

UPJ just announced their 4 recruits for the next season.

1. They better be quick.
2. They better be able to shoot 3's.

Not a lot of ht. there, more of the same last few years.

The 6'7" kid from Poland should help. 

Do you go to any of their games? Opposing teams eat 6'7" players, when they're 6'9, 6 10" or bigger. And he's one guy. Where is the rest of the big dudes?

Yeah, I said earlier in this thread they could use a traditional center. After seeing them play last year, they struggled in rebounding.


D2 basketball is more wide open and shooting-based than D1, you look at the teams with a lot of success at this level, they play fast and shoot a lot of 3's, that's kind of how UPJ needs to play given their roster.

UPJ's recruiting base is primarily Western PA, you just don't see many kids taller than 6'6" walking around here. The ones that are really tall are probably going D1.   

For size, they're going to have to get more creative. i.e. watch the Division 1 transfer market, look international ect.

Grubbs was supposed to be the man to get those big WPIAL recruits. Maybe he has a lil bro.

He will be a great fit for UPJ, and has a bright future ahead of him. Can’t wait to watch his high school team play this year!
