Gazette vs other papers

I remember when my great friend Bill Clark -- God rest his soul -- was sports editor of the Gazette. It's amazing how much stuff he had to cover. And Paul Rowan was terrific too. I miss old Paul -- who was a fine copy editor as well. Plus, as a digression, if you had a Civil War question, Paul knew the answer.

Personally, I love reading the Gazette. They have in depth coverage of local sports. No other papers really have that. You might get a box score, and if you are lucky you'll have a tiny summary. The Gazette takes good pictures and has awesome summaries on the game. I hope they keep up the good work.

The Gazette photography is excellent. I also enjoy the columns Bill Creps has been writing. Maybe some people don't like all the names and stats, but not the diehards. (For ten years I had the Bill James Baseball Abstract in the bathroom. Then the toilet one day overflowed and ruined the book. Bathroom reading has never been the same since.)

For covering local sports, the Gazette does a great job of it. They also do alright in covering the local area. But for international stories and national sports, yahoo news and several other news sites are great.

I agree that the Gazette does a great job locally. The writers are very personable to talk to also. My only knock on the paper is the coverage of the Altoona Curve. I think this could be covered a little better. I know there are only two full-time sportswriters and they cover the local scene so well. I'm sure that's why the Curve take a back seat. I can't argue with that either. I'm just wanting to make a great sports page "greater".

I also like the fact that the Gazette does its best to cover junior high sports.
