Dist 5-A Playoffs

We are our own district with 11 teams, I think. Many of those teams are playing each other on a consistent basis (mey, ct, wind, shade, berl, and maybe another I'm missing). Due to the timing of the state playoffs, it is a must to get 6 teams in. 2 get a bye and the other 4 play in round 1. Most years, I'd bet there will be 4 pretty good teams. This year things are down...WAY down. We can't help that, but that is the system. It is better to have that to play for amongst schools your own size, than it is to enter the 5/6 playoffs. Most of the time D6 is better by far and we know that. The 5 champ can be competitive with the 6 champ most of the time.

The payoff for winning 5??? A matchup against the WPIAL champ. I like the system....really like it. I wish that only 4 teams made it to keep things more competitive, but that wouldn't work with the state's setup. District 6 is going to go to 16 teams. Wait til you see that when it happens. The top seed already beats the 8 seed by 40 points most seasons. There are a few teams there that are just unbelievable (BC, BG, Bell, etc). District 6 has an easier road to haul in the state playoffs then.

This "joke" happens in hoops all over. Aren't some playoff systems "open" to all teams that want in? I was thinking that was an occurence in the area...but I might be wrong about this. Wrestling...anybody qualifies for Districts... Baseball, there are sub .500 teams in it. Some of them even win (8 seeded Shade last year was under .500 and knocked off a real good NBC team). I don't like it for football, but it does happen in other sports. I think in the end though, you'll see two solid teams in the D5 finals. My pick with future record heading in:

NBC (8-3) vs Windber (9-1) probably at Bedford or Ridge...just a guess.

NBC should beat West Branch, then if they are the 3 seed they'll get Tussey. Win that one and they get Rockwood in the semi's...then on to Windber in the championship.

Winber, I predict will lose to Portage and then beat the 4 or 5 seed in the semis.

I think that matchup would be pretty good for the football fans in the area....

coach why cant just 4 teams make the cutoff? all you have to do is give them a week 10 bye, im sure alot of teams would like a rest before going into the playoffs, if anything itd be an advantage. and if they felt it so important to keep playing, then they could just find some team that didnt qualify and play them in week 10, it really doesnt matter. id rather see 4 winning teams with a bye than 4 losing/4winning teams and an extra game.

Personally, I like this new format. Before, the District 5A teams didn't really have much of a reason to play. You could lose two games and be given a game against a team like BG. You knew you were going to lose by 40 points. This makes it interesting and really gives kids an incentive to play. It gives them a drive for a District Championship. After that, they're given the WPIAL Champion, and that's how it should be. This type of playoff system gives the players something to play for other than make the playoffs and lose by 40. That is what really matters. High school sports are about fun, not about putting teams in a position where they could almost never win a district championship. I'm glad to see they're actually giving the players a reasonable goal to shoot for.

Southern Huntington with a 7-1 record...

Scenario: Tussey Mt. looses and goes 3 - 6. Anyway you look at it there is going to be a second 3 - 6 team since Twp. and NS play and possibly even a third 3 win team since Shade plays Ferndale. What would happen? All three teams go and make 8 in D5-A or they flip a coin for the 6th place spot?

But i believe with Tussy getting a big win over Everett, a Double-A school, they will have more seed points.

Top 6 make it...and any after than have to be 4 win teams...
