holiday means 'holy day'. so to wish someone a happy holiday still has a religious meaning.

That's just a cop-out. We have the "holidays" of Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and lots of other secular festive times, St. Patty's Day, President's Day, Flag Day, Columbus Day, etc. All are considered as a holiday, yet have NOTHING to do with the birth and death of the Saviour of Christianity, Jesus Christ. Many say happy holidays without ever thinking of the real reason for the season, so how can you say with a straight face "Happy Holidays" and try to fool everyone that you meant it as a religious greeting or closing? As long as we remember which was the first and true holiday? ....i totally agree with you Pale Rider. listening to the news program one day and this topic was being discussed. i guess other countries think this issue is a big farce. It was said that a journalist from China wanted to wish the Americans a Merry Christmas. It's pretty sad when a communist country can wish one another Merry Christmas, but in our country our government discourages it.
