I think I counted correctly-- 18 out of 32 remaining A and AA teams are either a private or charter school. Hmmmm

Again I must reiterate, Catholic Schools and Charter Schools are two very different things. You can't compare the two. So we have 3/16 teams are Catholic Schools in Boys Basketball.

You keep saying they are so different Crimson. As a type of school they might be, but in terms of athletics---neither is operating within a defined boundary like the traditional public schools are. In that regard, the part that matters for this argument, they are basically one and the same. Sorry dude.
One way they are different is that most kids aren't entering the Catholic school system in the same way. It seems like half the kids that enter into a charter or cyber school just can't cut it at the traditional school so they jump ship.

A cyber school with 4 graduates, as opposed to Bishop McCort. I can attest Bishop McCort wasn't online, and had a few more than graduates. And all 4 of our graduates weren't Division 1 Basketball players. BIG Difference.

Player A leaves his public school to attend a new school.
This school has no boundary limitations and is either a parochial or charter school.
This school has a good athletics program.
This student could have played the sport he is playing at his own "home" school.
Maybe the PIAA should man up a little bit more. If a student is transferring to a private institution but his/her own home school has this sport already then he/she must play there if they transfer in 8-12 grade. If they transfer prior to grade 8, then they can participate at the school they moved in to. If someone from out of state moves in and was already in the same type of system then he/she can enter and play at the private school.
I wonder if player A would have left his public school this past year for the private school he went to knowing that he wouldn't be able to play football there?? He could transfer there but would have still had to play at his own home district.
Player B attends a public school.

Player B does not want to participate in the athletics that his school offers. He chooses to move into a neighboring public school district. The PIAA has a hearing and Player B must sit out. If Player B had chosen to switch to the private school mentioned above it would not have been an issue.

Yeah 100% of the kids in Prep Charter's graduating class are D1 Basketball players. 96% of Bishop McCOrt is from the Parochial system. Thats a Big difference, whether you wish to believe that or not.

I LOL when private school folks try to say they don't recruit athletes. Really?

The recruited player spoke up and the coach got caught red handed. But wait, all she was a varsity basketball coach and all she was trying to do is exercise her 1st amednment rights and "talk about the fantastic benefits of a private school education" after attending the 4th or 5th game of the season for this particular athlete. The PIAA upheld the coach's 1 year suspension given by the WPIAL. Try to convince me that what this coach from North Catholic did doesn't happen EVERY SINGLE DAY at McCruit, Guilfoyle, etc.
I have a lot more respect for the private schools who just admit that it's part of their job at a self-ssustaining high school to recruit athletes and admit that need based aid is sometimes used to fill a "need" at quarterback or point guard.
Those who don't admit this are kidding noone. IT'S YOUR JOB TO RECRUIT. Just call it what it is. Are you folks who support private schools saying recruiting for athletic purposes NEVER happens? Please.

There was a very good documentary the other night on Coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony's in New Jersey about their 2008 team. That team had 6 D1 seniors and more future D1 recruits in the junior class. I don't think that these kids thought that the education at St Anthony's was better to warrant the nearly 1 hr commute from the city over the river. It may have also helped that Coach Hurley was the Director for the Department of Recreation and I'm sure he would have seen these kids play before High School. Does things like this happen at McCort, Carrol, or Guilfoyle? Probably not. But when you can fill a hole in your starting lineup (Dill to McCort a couple years back) something has to give. Ferndale could have made a run in his senior year if he would have stayed with Guant, Mattis, & Stumpo.
