Good point. I wonder if there are any rules or regulations on this. When do/can high school players make "official" visits, not until senior year?

1) What happens on an unofficial visit at PSU really depends on the level of the recruit like all schools. The average unofficial visit at PSU is basically a one day event for the average recruit. Player will arrive and check in before the game, depending on when they arrive they will be given a tour of the Lasch Building where they will speak with coaches and players. They will also be given a tour of the campus if time provides. Next they will head over to the stadium where they will watch the team arrive. Then will go to the recruiting lounge where they will eat and socialize with each other. Then they will head to the field where they will watch pregame warm ups, speak with coaches and speak with Joe. Then before the game they will be taken to there seats which are right next to the student section. After the game most just leave and go home unless they have friends on the team. Your upper end blue chip junior recruits and your senior recruits with written offers will general either talk with Joe before the game in his office or after the game at his home.
2) Stats are important but not the most important considering the leading rusher and passer in PA history either aren't or will not be playing FBS football. College coaches also look at level the of competition and the level of talent around the player. The LHAC's level competition is on the lower side when compared to the rest of the state. That is why most LHAC players do not receive early offers, most have to prove themselves in summer camps and combines. The other important thing that coaches look at is measurables. Is the player big enough, strong enough, fast enough, etc. to compete at the level we play. They take all this stuff into account when they offer a scholarship to a high school player. There are numerous examples of players with lesser stats but who play at a higher level of competition getting an offer over a player who puts up amazing numbers against lesser competition.
3) John Rizzo, I am not sure at this time if PSU will offer but PSU football have alot of interest in him. They believe he can be a Mike Zordich type player, a two way player who will develop into a FB in their system. They are looking at approximately 5 juniors, including him that can feel that position, right now. That is just a priminary number because many coaches have not got any junior film out on players. I cannot speak about the interest Cael Sanderson may or may not have in him.
It is extremely early in process for most juniors, they can not be sent a written offer till September 1st, 2011. It is very positive that he is getting looks for PSU right now but people need to remember that even he is given a verbal offer it means nothing. PSU gives out about 150 verbal offers a year but only gives out 50 to 75 written offers a year. Written offer is general called a committable offers but not always, the school has to accept the commitment which they can refuse.

An official visit is considered a visit with all expenses paid. Official visits can be no longer than 48 hours long. A player cannot take an official visit until the college coaches have a player's official transcripts and their SAT or ACT score. A player is not allowed to take an official visit until after their first day of classes of their senior year.

First of all, I think it is ridiculous for people to talk some of the kids up and then if they don't make D1 they are the first to tear them down. Just enjoy what all these young men can do on the field and see where the chips fall.
That being said, I also think it is equally counterproductive to get on here and try and argue with the above group of people. If a kid got invited to go to a PSU game good for him!!! Thats awesome. Who cares if it "doesn't mean anything." Why do you people have to prove to the equally ridiculous preceeding group of people that they are wrong and you are right.
I listened as people on here built S. Rugg up and then tore him down. He is at a great academic university playing football. How can you beat that? So what if he didn't go D1. There are many other examples on here but why rehash all of them.
I hope Rizzo, Williams, (your favorite hs player's name here) all have the chance to prove themselves at the next level.
I think the people on both sides of this discussion should just relax and as hs football fans enjoy some of the talented teams/players we do have in this area.
