It was much different than basketball as we know it to be in western PA, that's for sure. It's an entirely different world. Not that there aren't good players here in western PA, but just not nearly as many. While western PA gets the occasional mid-major D1 player, and a rare high major player, there are many small to mid major D1 players there, and high majors are a lot more prevalent. Western PA is a good place for D3 coaches to recruit. Eastern PA is a good place for D1s to recruit. D2 coaches just get what is left, and wait for the kids who transfer down from D1 after being in over their heads and sitting on the bench or flunking out of school.

Some of it is that there is much more population in that part of the state (like 75-80% of PA's population is east of the Susquehanna River), some of it is that basketball is much more popular and much more in the culture there. Football and wrestling are king in western PA.
