After talking to a couple of Fairview parents last night at their tip-off tournament, Fairview is looking forward to playing Bishop McCort. Knowing little to next to nothing about your area in basketball I am assuming McCort must be very good. To "knowitall" Fairview is where all the Doctors and Lawyers in the City of Erie live. Money is not an object to this district. To "Eagle 13" you would be correct everyone is back, but their inside presence of Shannon Jackson is also back, he was out with a knee injury last year. Last year Vincentian rolled over Fairview by 30, apparently one of the Bishops down your way beat Vincentian....so Fairview is good, but they are not state title material, they just want to play good competition...I am sure McCort or Guilfoyle will give it to them....I just wish the games were not 200 miles from here.

That is correct. Bishop Carroll from the LHAC beat Vincentian twice last season, and handed then their ony two losses of the season. Carroll is loaded this season as well, they only lost one player from last year.

Bishop McCort beat Carroll both times last season, in very close games. McCort, though, lost more coming into the season. Their coach moved on and they lost 3 starters. Still they should be pretty good. As I said earlier they the the best player in District 6 in Nemo Trexler. He's a 6-4 very athletic forward that averaged 19 and 9 last season. They have some good role players, and are a solid team.

They were knocked out by West Middlesex last year in a tight game in the second round.

Hipp playing, huh? After all the BS, the powers that be show they have no backbone regarding athletic-intent transfers.

C'mon Man. This is a kid who has a skill that can translate to $, perhaps to his own advantage for college or his private schools gate attendance. Its about the money in private schools!

I personally have no issues with an athlete that moves on to improve and garner more opportunity regardless if they are a public or private school student and where they transfer to.

The real issue is that there is a different set of rules for public school athletes. Private to private, or public to private transfer is an area the PIAA has no legal authority over, but in a public school, scenario, they assert their authority relentlessly. The rub is that the PIAA are the ones who let the private schools back into a mixed public versus private playoff system.

Imagine if you were a kid on a little league team or pee wee football team and you had one team in your league that by rule were allowed to go around and take the best players from all other teams. Is that the kids fault for being a good enough athlete to be sought after or is it the rules that allow it to happen that is at issue?

Now with the advent of "public charter" schools cherry picking the best student athletes, and doing the same thing as the privates have done forever, there is an even more complex mess to deal as even the privates are seeing their advantages being dwindled away.

The playoff system should revert back to the days when I was in school, and have separate playoffs and leagues for true public schools, and those public charters and privates that can accept transfers from other schools. I can guarantee that those schools who recruit today would ramp up their efforts to find the best academic and athletic talent, and that is a benefit for those kids who are talented enough at their respective sport or academics to get that kind of attention.

C'mon, man. Tell me why there are any rules in place AT ALL. Make a level playing field for everyone and throw all rules and regs out the window. Give everyone a trophy, have them all hold hands and sing Kum-Bay-Ya. Isn't that the way this entire country is going?

Crimson, I've been thinking about this for a while in reguards to your assesment of McCort's basketball team this year. I know you are the resident expert for McCort sports, but what makes you believe their basketball team will fare better than their football team? Sure they will win the games they should win, but I see at least 3 weaknesses that they can not over come. BC will expose each and everyone on those on Friday and give a blueprint for other's to follow. Yes I know BC is one of the better teams in the state this year, but McCort's weaknesses are one's that just can't be ignored if you are going to complete against good teams. I hope I'm wrong because the Laurel Highlands conference and D6 needs a better than average McCort basketball team.

Well to say McCort is solidified as a top team this year wouldn't be true. I get that. They lost a very good and successful coach and three starters from last year's team.

But if the bench mark is the football team's 2-8 equivalent, I'd say they would pass those goals rather quickly.

McCort has the best player in the conference/district in my opinion in Nemo Trexler. I've watched a lot of this kid through his career, he can flat out take over a game provide it he stays out of foul trouble. I bet we see less of him in the post and he will have more free reign this season.

They have two guards with starting experience, and two forwards with plenty of game experience. They also have 3 sophomores I think that can contribute.

They could come out and lose to Carroll by 15 and I wouldn't bat an eye to be honest. That's a tough opener and BC is that much better, but don't at all be surprised to see McCort in the LHAC and D6 title race.
