It is a .500 record that is crucial, not 10 wins.
It is possible for a team that is in the sixth spot to be rated higher, but out of the top 5 and with a sub .500 record to be sitting at home and a team rated 7th who is sitting at .500 on the nose or a game over to actually qualify.

The rule is TOP 5 are in PLUS anyone else who is .500 and above and not in top 5 can qualify. hypothetically, you could have the 8th team at .500 and in the playoffs while 6 and 7 sit if they don't meet the .500 criteria
