To give themselves message board credibility? To prove to others that they are a real fan? Because as alumni they feel they are a part owner of the team and a vital cog in its success?

Oh, give me a break. People that are able to travel 4 hours and get a hotel room to watch a college football game have more than enough resources to pay whatever the asking price for an NFL ticket is.
This thread is about preference so there isn't a right or wrong but I've attended dozens of college and pro football games. Pro football game doesn't even come close to the excitement of a college game in my eyes. But I'm sure there are others that feel the opposite.

You mean like the thousands of people that call into The Fan annually and refer to the Steelers as "We". This is the case for every sport. You have the diehard who thinks they are important to the success. Last time I watched an NFL game, fans still yelled louder when the home team was on defense than on offense.

How many non-alumni travel long distances to watch Penn State? I suppose those that like marching bands and the agricultural genius of the college stadium.
Or perhaps those who live in Cleveland.

Say oww.... NFL stadiums get sold out because they hold a lot less people than college stadiums.

NFL stadiums get sold out because a large portion of seats are corporate owned.
Outside of a dozen or so very large college stadiums (PSU, OSU, Michigan and etc) most college stadiums are on par with the avg NFL stadium... around 70-75k or so.

I get you are a NFL guy but when 125 FBS schools averaged out to 45,000 in attendance last year, it leads me to believe there are a lot of people out there that prefer the college product. If you wanna live in fantasy land and act like the only college football supporters are locals to the rural university or alumni that live in the city and think they are a vital part of the program, so be it.
I personally think there are a lot more people gravitated to the style of game amature football creates.

Personally I like pro sports because of the parity created by the draft system. Very few 73-0 laughers. College sports are a competition between haves and have-nots. I actually watched the first half of the OSU - VT game last nite hoping to see an "upset", even though VT is a major program, only to witness a blowout.

The Steelers are a contender and probably will get blown out on Thursday.

Touché! But then again, it could be a shootout.
