It's not that those teams would "miss out" on the playoffs because they didn't qualify. They would be "left" out because a "City League Championship" held precedent over PIAA District playoffs

The point is if they win those games, they probably finish ahead of Westinghouse, therefore Westinghouse would be the one at #4 and not in the district playoffs.

Westinghouse shouldn't get rewarded for having a scheduling conflict. That's ridiculous.

Regarding the AA Playoff situation in Districts 5/8.  Lots of good discussion and good questions and concerns.  I will attempt to clarify.  I'm sure not everyone will agree but I will throw out there what has been agreed upon as best I understand it.
Some information based on good questions that came up:
[ul][li]This Playoff is a SUBREGIONAL not a District 5 Championship.  The two districts have to agree and when in doubt the PIAA steps in and runs a subregional.  The City League Chairman made District 5 leadership aware of the possibility of Westinghouse qualifying for the City Championship Game prior to the season.  It was then discussed at the next District 5 meeting in mid/late September.[/li]
[li]Westinghouse does not have an "off" week.  The City League semifinals are Oct. 28-29 and the semifinal winners play Sat. Nov. 5 which is also the subregional semifinal date.[/li]
[li]For ranking purposes, D5 uses the enrollment on the out of state team that was played and fits that enrollment into PIAA enrollment parameters to award points and then total points are divided by games played to arrive at the team rating.[/li][/ul]
With that said, there are two scenarios involving Westinghouse.  And let's assume it's a foregone conclusion that they will defeat winless Carrick this weekend.

1. Westinghouse LOSES their City league semifinal on Oct. 28-29.   In this situation they become the #3 seed (unless CR goes 0-2 the last two weeks.....more on that in a bit) and travel to #2 CR or Berlin.  Everett is #4 and travels to #1 UNLESS CR goes 0-2 and Everett goes 2-0 the final two weeks in which case #4 CR goes to #1 Berlin and #3 Everett goes to #2 Westinghouse.  Everett going 1-1 even with 2 Ridge losses keeps the Warriors at #4 in this first set of circumstances.

2. Westinghouse WINS their City league semifinal on Oct. 28-29.  This would give them enough points that they become the #1 seed jumping both CR and Berlin regardless of what those two do the final two weeks.  This is the scenario that many on this forum are upset about.  In this case Westinghouse proceeds to the City League Championship game, in effect getting a subregional bye as the #1 seed and #2 and #3 (probably Berlin and Ridge) play at the highest seeded team in a subregional semifinal to see who plays Westinghouse at a neutral site for the championship.  Everett can still displace Ridge in this scenario if Ridge goes 0-2 and Everett wins both their remaining games.  then Berlin would host Everett and C.Ridge at 5-5 would not make the playoffs.

Again it's important to note that this was known before the first regular season games this year but AFTER all of the preliminary information went out on the D5 website.

This way of handling this situation was decided back in mid/late September at a District committee meeting and verbalized to all the schools involved.  Again, this is a subregional and the districts involved must get along and work together and the City Championship is a big deal in Pittsburgh.   This is not the first time that a local district committee has made decisions after the start of the season regarding playoff format in football.  I believe a few years ago District 6 was up in the air regarding counting 10th date points (first year that western pa went from 9 to 10 regular season games prior to playoffs) even up until the last two weeks of the season before they made that decision that affected their playoff seedings.  Correct me if I'm wrong on that one.

Agree or disagree, my only motive was to try and clarify or clear the air on this controversial situation.

If you look at the district 5 website, it states that it is an open tournament. Anyone can enter. Here is the current standing:

Westinghouse will need to decide if they want to participate or not. Or if the district or city league, will alter their schedule.

Thanks for the clarification Head Roadie. It would be unfortunate for Everett if they go 7-3 and miss the playoffs but I guess that's how it goes.
