Sometimes people who do not make the SQS do medal at states. Sometimes the weather is awful at districts and athletes who could medal are left home.
Case in point was in the girls 100 meter hurdles last year in D5. Sarah Snyder was clearly one of the best hurdlers in the area and a likely medalist at states. At districts there was a signficant headwind in the hurdles. She took 2nd to Taylor Crawford and missed the SQS by only a few hundredths of a second. She certainly would have qualified in any other district. So kingdomofcrush, there are people from D5 who do not always benefit from the system. If you want more examples, I'd be happy to oblige.

Great point runner,Crush I can tell you that district 6 every year gets kids throught that wouldn't have made it at district 5 because of the one qualifier stip. The state has upped alot of those standards way above what it would take to medal. Thus the small districts really can suffer at times. Also like once a runner says a head or tail wind can make a huge difference in performance.People also have the misconception that if you have exceeded the qualifier during the season you get the bid to states, not true it can only occur at the district meet so weather can really effect it.Heck some districts get 6 automatic bids and some of the 5th and sixth places can be lacking. It ain't all peaches in cream over in little district 5.Whats that saying "the grass is always greener".South paw you beat me to it I too was going to email the guy and tell him about the same things.

yeah district 6 getting 3 to D5 1 might not been entirely accurate how many schools do each have? Point being their is already a SQS every district could have 2 much depth. What exactly were the conditions like I mean this is PA it probably happens in many districts! Whens the last time d5 place someone in the 100?

Last year I believe we had a placewinner in the 100.
Even had a champ in the 100 in the 90's. When was the last D-6 athlete to win the 100?
Here's the reality. Some sports we (d-5) aren't competitive year in and year out in the state. Most we are.
Over the last 20+ years I don't think Bedford has been intimidated to play any d-6 school in football. District 5 doesn't need to feel like the ugly step-child. We do fine. We don't need to justify ourselves. I hope Bedford plays well against GCC. If they do, maybe the rest of the state looks at us differently. I won't. If we play poorly, some will say I told you so. I won't think any different. There are years we are very good and years we aren't as strong. Thats how it goes in sports.

How about last year. Zach Millin of Everett was 7th. The year before Samantha Valiton of CR was 5th on the girls side. Certainly bad weather can happen in any district and it has undoubtedly cost athletes spots at state. However smaller districts are punished more when they have depth. I can name D5 runner-ups who did not meet the SQS at districts, but would have had a good chance at winning a medal at states. Can you name me a 4th place finisher from D6 that would have been a legitimate medal threat had they made it to states?
You don't see the D5 schools complaining that their class A school has to play the WPIAL champ in the first round of the football playoffs every year. Their AA representative gets a favorable draw and everyone is up in arms when they do well. No playoff system in the PIAA is perfect....sometimes it works for you and other times it works against you.

That is very accurate district 6 gets 3 automatic bids and district5 gets 1 in AA(only 2 classes in track).District 6 has a little over twice the number of AA schools in track. I don't believe I would question the speed of district 5, there have been alot of good years in the sprints for this district.Believe it or not there can be great athletes in smaller districts.

I'm not very fond of the team wrestling brackets either. Some districts get a bye through TWO rounds of the team tournament. One bye I wouldn't have a problem with, but some districts, like D7 and D3 get two. I think that's a bit much. On top of that, the reward for winning the second round match is to get the third round match later that same day against the team that had the byes.

I saw in the paper today that it looks like D5 is getting put back in with D6 for AA football. I'm sure the D6 posters on here will be happy now. At least until the D5 teams start taking some of their spots in the playoffs.
