From what I hear about this kid he should not be throwing this much this early in the spring if he is as talented as I hear. As a coach are you willing to risk this kids college future just to win an early season high school game that they probably would win anyway. Seems to me that BG probably has another kid that could have thrown and won. Looks to me like a coach is more worried he might lose a game more than a player losing a scholarship.

Can any one remember Brock Goodling..........He too was an ace of the staff at Mt. Union......He too had good mechanics and worked all year round to better himself. I believe that the overuse of him in high school had something to do with the surgery he needed his freshman year of college at Clemson......like SCube said......Reason one for injury is improper mechanics and #2 is overuse......I wish nothing but the best for Jex but he himself has to look out for his future along with his coaches

Everyone seems to be bagging on Pugh but I watched the Hileman (PITT Commit) kid from hburg throw Friday, close Sunday, and read he closed Monday. He has arm issues and was in physical therapy all winter rehabbing his arm from what I hear. Middle infielder walking over to the mound with 10 pitch warm-up then throwing as hard as he can 3 days in a row. What is wrong with those coaches? That is worse in my opinion. If BG wanted Pugh for the conference game Monday than he should have thrown 2 or 3 innings Friday.

Perhaps it's time to abolish high school baseball? With the increase in games with AAMe and something known as fall ball and the growing fragility of pitcher's arms something has to give. Most schools don't have sufficient pitchers to play four or five games per week.

I'm sure most of us know some names that were probably overused in their high school careers, that led to either surgery, or end of careers. Two I can think of, off the top of my head, Andy Rush, Somerset, and ERA's Rick Roberts. Now, they may not have been serious injuries, but they were throwing injuries.

Many of the advanced players who required TJ surgery suffered injuries because of years of overuse that finally caught up to them. Every time a muscle is worked, it is torn. Rest then heals the fibers, and the muscle gets stronger. However, ligaments and tendons don't respond the same way as muscles as they have no blood supply to them in order to heal them (look it up). Therefore, healing the accumulated stretching from a repetitive activity like pitching/throwing takes much longer. Continued overuse only makes the ligament more prone to future injury.

And yes, by the way, catchers do have issues with their UCL as well. However, they always have the option of switching positions, too.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is what his future college coach may think about his overuse in high school. I know how pro guys think - kids with overuse issues can get pushed down the draft list.
