Playoff fields depend on when PIAA wants to end the season. I haven't seen this.  Right now it is Week 16, but they are letting teams start a week earlier if they want to drop a scrimmage, but still playoffs would start Week 10 (I'm counting the optional play date as Week 0 so we can compare to current format).

If PIAA wants to finish Week 15, you would need 32 teams on Week 11. For 1A, those should be divided as (1) each from D1/2/3/11; (2) from D4/10; (4) from D5/9; and (8) from D6/7.  That gives the districts Week 10 if they want to expand their field, say like D5 does now with 6 teams.  But while it might make sense to have the small districts play a one-game championship, it doesn't make sense for D6 to expand its field to 12 or 16.  In that case, you might as well just have 32 teams on Week 10 and finish on Week 14.  They can give districts (WPIAL) the option to play Week 0 if they want to start their playoff Week 9.

For 2A, the 32 team field would be (1) each from D1/5/8/12; (2) from D2/3/9/11; (4) from D4/6/10; and (8) from D7.
For 3A, (1) for D3/9; (2) for D4/10/12; (4) for D2/3/11; (8) for D7; and (4) between D5/6/8 (I couldn't figure out another way).

EDIT: I looked at some articles and it seems the options are 1 scrimmage and 10 games or 2 scrimmages and 9 games.  Both would end the regular season on Week 9 with playoffs starting Week 10 and they shorten the season by 2 weeks.  The other option is to keep 2 scrimmages and 10 games which would require narrowing the playoff field to 16 teams to finish by Week 14, which I don't think is possible with the current district format.

I thought it was kind of interesting to see McCort and Johnstown "complaining" about having to move up a classification. I think Penna said something to the effect of "well obviously we would want to remain AAA but we'll just have to play who we play" and the Tribune made it seem like McCort will have a tougher time "playing up". To me either team won't really be facing different opponents in playoffs, maybe McCort more so than JTown so idk why they were acting like this is a big deal. Whether it's called AAA or AAAA, the teams are essentially the same

What's the deal with Reading High School? Over 1000 kids in a graduating class?! Its more than three times the size of Central Dauphin East which is the smallest 6A.

According to the Google, it's 9th largest in the country.  That's insane. They should win all the sports.

I think they lose a lot of good athletes to surrounding private schools.

Also, can we talk about St. WPIAL's opposition to this. Their number one (and probably only) issue with this was they wouldn't be able to play six games at Heinz Field. 1) Who wants to play football at 9am in front of 60,000 empty seats. 2) There is a beautiful new facility in Station Square. Play Friday night/Saturday afternoon/night at each site and rotate the games assigned to each.
