Keep in mind that additives are necessary with today's fuel injected vehicles to keep the injectors clean. If the additives weren't in there, fuel injectors would clog and you'd blame the gas for messing up your vehicle.
These high prices stink for everyone, but I can guarantee you it isn't the retailers making money on this. Ask any retailer around and they will tell you they would prefer to have lower fuel prices, because fuel prices are so volatile the profits are extremely small. By paying more for fuel, customers have less "expendable" cash to buy things inside where profit margins are higher.
I've also heard people complaining about why some prices are 2.99 and others are 3.29. Right now, you're more likely to find a smaller retailer at a lower price because they still have fuel in the tanks bought at a lower price, where the larger retailers have exhausted those reserves and are now buying their fuel at a much higher price. Remember it works both ways too. When prices come down, a lot of smaller retailers are selling higher compared to larger retailers.
Some states even have laws (competitor predator) that force retailers to make a certain amount of profit on gas, so that big retailers don't run the smaller guys out. In other words, in some states, large retailers cannot legally sell fuel less than their cost because that would hurt the smaller retailers.

ONE major volcanic eruption puts more pollutants into the atmosphere during its erupting than all the cars and trucks in the world! What a crock! Let's put a giant cork in Mother Nature's A$$. That will solve any ozone problem.

Pale, we need to control what we CAN control. Besides, over what period of time are you talking about all the cars and trucks in the world? Haven't you noticed that in recent years, the hole in the ozone has gotten larger, and the world has gotten warmer? Hmmm....
Anyways, even if that is true, what about the natural laws of supply and demand? What about the world's petroleum supply running out if we keep using it? It takes millions of years to form this 'black gold' and the world is able to use up pretty much the entire supply in a couple centuries. There are other reasons to conserve gas.

I obviously can't verify what I heard about that volcano, but if I remember it was all the vehicle emissions in 1 YEAR. Choose to believe it or not. The holes in the ozone are always there- some years it gets bigger, some years it shrinks. Oceanographic scientists have monitored the ocean temps for years, and have corroborated the fact that every 35 to 40 years the oceans DO get several degrees warmer. then they cool several degrees. The warmer cycles go with more and deadlier hurricanes. It's been documented. El Nino is another phenomena that goes in cycles. Don't confuse that one with El Moldo. El nino can mean several years of drought around here, and major problems elsewhere. El Moldo can mean several more years of witty, informative banter. LOL I would be more concerned about all the forest fires and all the population in the world and combustion of materials using up all the OXYGEN in the atmosphere. If petroleum products run out in 20 to 50 years, we'll still be around as a civilization. If all the air goes bad, then what? What can you substitute? grow roots from your feet, hold your palms to the sun and photo-synthesize to live? Good luck.

Ok, so let's throw pollution aside. I like facts, and that you provide several strong arguments for global warming being perhaps a cyclical phenomenon. But when the ocean gets warmer, does that mean that the land, especially places several hundred miles from the nearest ocean, get warmer? Or is the ocean getting warmer and cooler with land temperatures? Could that temperature variance perhaps be due to geological pressure, such as shifts in the tetonic plates and volcanos forming underwater? It is something to think about. And it would make sense that now is when the ocean is the warmest it has been, as we've just had 3 hurricanes hit Florida last year, and Katrina bury New Orleans this year. Hmmmm.....
Anyways, there are still reasons for limiting fuel consumption, most notably the laws of supply and demand and the inevitable fact that the world's oil supply, will, if its current usage level continues, run out sometime in this century. Besides that, I don't think many of us on here can really afford to not make some adjustments on fuel consumption. Along those lines, I'd really like a moped for around here, lol. Seriously, many of the roads I drive on locally have speed limits of 40 miles an hour or less, and much of my driving (other than attending classes) is within 5 to 10 miles (at the absolute most) of where I am. If I can find one in good shape that I can afford, I may seriously consider it. Hmmm...

WOW! You and I almost agreeing on climactic changes. I'm impressed. I tend to agree about the changes in the 'land' temperatures, but not to the extent of the water and air. They are easier to change temps. Go down into any mine or any deep hole in the ground like an old dry well and measure the temp. It always has been, and always will be, around 50-55 degrees, give or take one or 2. Ask any miner. To get anything higher, other than a volcanic fissure, you would have to go down several miles through the mantle closer to the semi-molten magma. The ocean temps and the atmosphere temps, are subject to direct warming from the sun, but it isn't throughout the water or air. Stratification and currents cause both water and air to be different temps in layers. The bottom of a lake or ocean is always colder because the heat, or sunlight, doesn't reach the bottom. By the same phenomena, the bottoms of lakes are the last to freeze in winter, because the upper waters are easier to freeze. The atmosphere tends to give up its heat to space, unless it is reflected back to the surface because of clouds, and I only say to a certain extent, because of pollutants in the air, such as VOLCANIC dust and emissions.

I agree with that post to a certain extent. I take exception to this. He states that it takes two to three years for the particulates from a GIVEN volcano to settle out of the atmosphere. That is probably correct. However, at any given time, there are probably at least a DOZEN volcanoes around the world, all actively spewing ash and gases into the atmosphere, so therefore, there is a constant, ever-changing volume of pollutants in the atmosphere, caused by volcanoes. Get off the CFC kick.
