How bout Pitts grand experiment WPInheAdL?

After bottoming out with the NCAA's lowest graduation rate for scholarship football players last year, Pitt is attempting to point out a parallel in its rise to prominence academically and athletically.

Pre-empting an NCAA report due in mid-September, Pitt athletic department officials revealed this week that the program's graduation rate, while still one the 10 worst among the 117 Division I-A schools, has nearly doubled.

I cut and pasted this from an articile from Tribreview. Of course this is just the first paragraph.

Sure the Grand Experiment worked with Felder and Wedderburn, they got a "degree" but with a lot of taint that you don't want to talk about...PSU accepted them as non-qualifiers, which by the way you said NEVER HAPPENS at PSU because they have such "high academic admissions standards", right?

Then, Felder and Wedderburn were funneled into programs where a Border Collie could be an honor student. Then, on top of it, PSU brags about the success of the Grand Experiment and high graduation rates.

TAE, put your PSU arrogance and blue and white coke bottle lenses aside and just admit that I have proven via substantive examples that Penn State, JUST LIKE MANY OTHER PLACES, has academic and admissions standards and programs of study that aren't any better then many other places and in fact WORSE than Pitt's in at least some cases that I have documented. We both know that Pitt and PSU have higher academic and admissions standards than some places like WVU, or some SEC schools.

Instead, you continue to talk about PSU as some Ivy League like institution that "won't and can't accept football recruits who don't meet their high admissions and academic standards."

Please, TAE. If this is the case, explain how Felder was admitted to PSU main when prep schools wouldn't even take him. Explain the Wedderburn situation. Explain how if PSU has such "high admissions standards" that both of these non-qualifiers were admitted to the university. Explain why PSU and other B10 schools accept unlimited and partial qualifiers into their athletic programs, then preach academic rigor and high admissions standards.

BTW, I still can't still can't stop laughing at the "Chillin' With Lavon" piece. Now there's a poster child for PSU excellence and The Grand Experiment!

How do you know Felder was not accepted at prep schools? You do realize the kid was not allowed to play football, right? But then again, according to Titan, Gus Felder was a 5-star OL who is currently in the NFL and NCAA hall of fame. Thank God we shoved him through and lied and cheated to get him on the field.

I think you oughta go back a few threads and re-read the parts of the articles I posted, especially with Pullium. But you coincidentally didn't respond to them.

Article was from 2004, but when's the last time you saw an article have a quote like this regarding Penn State:

"Pitt increased its football graduation rate from 16 percent to 31 percent for the 1997 recruiting class."

Look and see how many academic all-americans he has had. How many has Pitt had since 1990, overall? TWO KIDS.

What is more comical than the Chisley article is you hiding behind academics to shield the fact that all these kids on Pitt's roster and all the kids in HS have seen about two seasons of Pitt football where they had winning years. Do you realize this is not 1983? These kids were born in 1991, dude.

I also noticed how you never responded to how I obliterated your thread regarding Pitt's recruiting prowess. How many 4-5* recruits does Pitt have again? How many did PSU have in 2010? Considering Penn State took the top 2 WPIAL players, AND, 2 Pitt "locks" speaks volumes. But I'll bet you didn't even know Ricketts' old man played for Pitt and Dieffenbach's old man is Pitt's tennis coach. When's the last time Pitt stole a legacy from Penn State? In fact, when's the last time Pitt landed the top player in the WPIAL?

Felder DID play football (sat out 1 year), but was accepted to PSU with a GED and was a non-qualifier. Where's the rigor there in terms of standards??? I read that Felder was rejected at several prep schools, I'll get the source if you want it.

How are Pitt's grad rates, by the way? I'll tell you how they are, look and see how many academic all-americans he has had. How many has Pitt had since 1990, overall? TWO KIDS.

I'm surprised that PSU hasn't had MORE AAs with the community college-esque academic programs they have created for football players and others. I would expect that a school like Pitt with more rigor would have few AAs than PSU. Speaking of AA, Perhaps JOKEpa should bring AA in to meet with many of his players...

BTW, Einstein, did you know that having a lot of transfers negatively affects grad rates?

Transfers count against a school's grad rates and Pitt has had a ton. They've changed coaches and coordinators a number of times since 1997. Do you think this doesn't impact transfer rates?

Removing players from the team (ie-disciplinary reasons) and players leaving early for the NFL affects grad rates, too, as these players end up dropping out or transferring. If PSU actually ever disciplined any of their players by removing them from the program, their grad rates would plummet. If they ever had the coaching to develop anyone talented enough to consider leaving early (like Navorro AfroMan did last year), then they'd surely have lower grad rates.

PSU, meanwhile, has few transfers because of their "stability" in coaching staff. Do you actually think that 69% of all players that play all 4 (or 5) yars at Pitt don't earn their degree? If so, you're dumber than I thought.

Since this is all you do, show me the grad rates of incoming players who stay all 4 or 5 seasons in both programs. I'd bet they're a lot closer, but I'd also bet that PSU's are still higher because of so many back-of-matchbook academic programs that they have created.
