This is a debate that will last forever, and it was not my intent for the post to stir up the debate again. The public school coaches and teachers are disadvantaged, the public school system is flawed because our public school system restricts them. Their are too many lawyers and tax payers who are vultures, and choosing to send your kids to a private school is the decision I should have made. The private schools have a distinct advantage to develop and foster kids in the right direction, even for those who are gifted athletes
I agree with you. Not trying to stir a debate. I as well as many others just don't like to see this kind of thing keep going on.

Cool usatf

and I agree with you that I dont like to be looking up to the private schools all of the time, hence why I am such a fervent and passionate fan routing against the privates when we get the chance to play them. (per my email post this morning giving props to BG) Everyone knows the deck is stacked, but every now and then you get those public teams that are able to do something special, thats important, otherwise there is no reason to "compete"

thnx

I really don't want to see this debate for the millionth time on here, especially after seeing that group of young men yesterday who grew up together, took their lumps, kept working hard, and were rewarded for all their efforts. The scene after that game is something unlike anything I've ever seen and something those young men will have forever. Having said all that, all I say is put a name out there. One name. If there is proof of recruiting a kid to go to a private school, report it to the District 6 and the PIAA and take your proof to a hearing where I know for a fact that if there was recruiting involved, all those involved at the offending school will be suspended from the PIAA for at least a year (there is precedent for this- see the Coach Molly Rottman case at North Catholic I mentioned earlier). One name, that isn't to much to ask when all these accusations are being thrown around on a daily basis. Not innuendo, one actual name. If someone, anyone, can provide that information, I'll stand right beside them in support at a hearing and my kids are graduates (and one current student) of BG.

I've been very honest on this board in the past and will say again that all the transfers who are now playing girls basketball at BG is not a level playing field with the Williamsburgs or Claysburgs of the world and never has been. I don't know how you can be more fair about the situation that that. However, I don't believe they are recruited. I do believe the PIAA rules allows them to go to one school to play regardless of where they live and that is a PIAA problem. IF they are actually being recruited by BG coaches or administration then that is a BG problem and I would support whatever penalties come of it. However, they aren't being actually recruited or being offered reduced tuition or anything else. If it were happening there are enough people within the confines of District 6 who don't like BG over they years that they would have reported it by now.

Lastly, I knew the recruiting/private school issue would soon come up again after yesterdays BG win, and I'll say it again. Every one of those kids came up through the BG parochial league system and no one was complaining when they were 1-9 three years ago. You can try and cheapen or diminish their accomplishments all you want but if you'd have seen the raw emotion from these young men yesterday which was a by-product of working together since 4th grade (9 main seniors started playing together at the same small 4th grade class at ACCS) you'd realize nothing could ever lessen their achievement. I was happy to be there and thrilled for those kids (as I would be for any school in D6-public or private). I say this a graduate of a small single A public school and the parent of 3 BG kids.

well stated SFB14, you made the right decisions for your kids, and a hearty congrats again to those hard working young men who accomplished some very lofty goals.

Just for the record....9 of the 10 senior boys on this BG football team went to and played football for ACCS (Altoona Central Catholic Schools). They were all there from 1st grade. The other, Matt Gormely, from St. Rose of Lima in Altoona. Virtually every player for BG that made an impact on the field went to a parochial school in altoona or hollidaysburg catholic.

Same thing goes for volleyball... I remember some guilfoyle girls volleyball teams from years ago that were AMAZING. And everyone of those girls grew up going to parochial schools.

Guilfoyle is successful in sports for many reasons.. But mostly because It is a small tight knit community that breeds values, morals, work ethic, and competitive nature on and off the playing field.

Great post, the part that I made bold print is the reason why this BG team won and Clairton lost. Clairton just didn't display those same traits as Guilfoyle had displayed all year. No one can make an argument against this football program for recruiting when the facts are straight. 9 out of these 10 guys have been playing together since FOURTH GRADE. It's plain and simple, people.

BGs boys are going to be questioned because the girls success in the past 10 years. Once one or two sports starts openly recruiting transfers (and I don't care if they pay or not its still recruiting them to switch athletically) all sports get a black eye. Sad thing is i feel there was more potential for better offers if some of these BG boys played on the Altoona team.

As has been stated here already. People have given names in the past on this very site. Then they basically get called liars ,end of story. I'm also so tired of hearing how BG doesn't recruit. They have a situation that allows transfers from a huge number of schools including Altoona, Hollidaysburg, Tyrone, Bellwood etc. Somehow magically none of these transfers ever happen for athletic intent? Yet so many other small schools in the area seem to lose their best athletes because all of a sudden they wish to go to a private. Now the question is asked why aren't these people caught? Do you honestly think they are going to say my intention of going to BG was athletic? How can you prove otherwise. A private conversation amongst AAU kids and their parents doesn't get recorded. If you accuse someone you need proof, the parties that are putting together these allstar teams aren't gonna give it to you. If these privates want accolades play in a private and charter classification and quit playing true single A schools!

In the October district 6 meeting minutes, it says that they accepted Bishop Guilfoyle's "plan of action" Was that dealing with recruiting or something else?
