It was not a free kick. I've looked for the rules on it for HS football, but could only find NFL rules, which stated it would result in a touchback.

Perhaps I'm not following what you mean by a free kick. Any kickoff is considered a free kick according to the rule book. It's just a fancy way to say kickoff. Not sure it matters anyway... This play had no effect on the game even if it was wrong. Game was a three TD game by that point...

It had no effect on the outcome, but still an interesting call. But it happened after BG scored, I guess there were personal fouls against Somerset that allowed BG to kick off from the 30. It was not a free kick (after a fair catch), and I don't think BG would opt to free kick it anyways if they were moving the ball on offense. Just didn't realize that you could be rewarded a field goal on just a normal kickoff, assumed it was the same as college and pro

This sounds like a "rouge" in Arena ball, where 3 points are awarded on a kickoff through the opposing uprights. Of course, Arena ball is on a much shorter surface.

The play was actually called incorrectly by the referees last night. The play should have been a touchback, however, when they lined up to kick BG was going to attempt an onside kick...but wheeler asked if this was a place to attempt a free kick. The ref got it wrong, BG should not have been given the 3 points.

The National Federation of High Schools rule book clearly states free kicks for three points can only follow a fair catch or awarded fair catch. Under the kickoff rules, there is no mention of a scoring play possibility. I can't believe the PIAA would have a different rule (you have to buy their rule book if you want to read it).

The PIAA does not write their own rules, they follow the NFHS

The Mirror had a story today with Mike Hudak of D-6 confirming officials misinterpreted the free kick rules.
