Perhaps D-nice’s post hit home with the truth it spoke about sheltered lives and prejudiced outlook since it was not just another mindless Penn State insult (which is the language of those on your level of thinking).

Intolerance? Ever hear of the concept of "innocent until proven guilty"? If a court, either judge or jury, finds Portland guilty of discrimination, then she should go and be punished, but until that happens, she has every right to stay. Furthemore, to suggest that people who go to an institution, or who live, in a rural area are more likely to be prejudiced, sheltered, and intolerant than those who do not is foolish.

Believe me pal, there are a lot of intolerant people who live and attend college in urban areas.

endorse "gang rape" but I think he feels that if the honeys are hanging all over the football players than they deserve what they get.

Do I “honestly believe Joe Paterno endorses rape?” No, nor did I say so, but I do believe he deserves blame for taking the situation lightly. You can’t tell me that what he said in response to the sexual assault allegations was acceptable. How could you? Need a refresher? Paterno is quoted as saying:

"There's some tough — there's so many people gravitating to these kids. He may not have even known what he was getting into, Nicholson. They knock on the door; somebody may knock on the door; a cute girl knocks on the door. What do you do?"
"Geez. I hope — thank God they don't knock on my door because I'd refer them to a couple of other rooms," Paterno continued. "But that's too bad. You hate to see that. I really do. You like to see a kid end up his football career. He's a heck of a football player, by the way; he's a really good football player. And it's just too bad."

And yes, I believe I’ve heard of the concept of “innocent until proven guilty.” Nonetheless, people shouldn’t jump to conclusions and say, “Yes, he’s a rapist! She’s a whore and deserved it!” or “He didn’t do it! She’s making false accusations!” True, but the facts remain: Paterno made derogatory remarks regarding a very serious subject. You can’t argue that Paterno, much to the dismay of anti-Penn State fans’, is a role model. He needs to live up to those standards, whether or not he chooses to be a role model, and set a good example for others to follow. Not taking sexual assault seriously sends a very wrong message, one that says that rape should be expected and accepted.

Anyway, change of topic…

And I’m not saying that ALL people who live in rural areas live sheltered lives and have narrow-minded views. But many people who live in such settings choose not to (or don’t have the opportunity to or are less likely to) experience situations, places, or people other than those they are familiar with. And I’m not saying ignorance is a crime. Some people just don’t realize what else is out there.

And yes, I agree that there are a lot of intolerant people in urban settings, too. They’re everywhere; don’t assume me to be so base. But if you disagree on the rural side of this argument, then you haven’t been to the same places I’ve been in Central Pennsylvania.

(And no, people don’t have to sick the hounds of hell on me for these comments; I’m from West-Central PA.)

That was actually a decent post, and I take back my earlier comments.

I said before that Joe should not have spoken out about the FSU player, even though he has yet to be charged months after the fact.

I'm from central PA also and have seen my share of bigotry. But taken as a whole, PSU is a very tolerant, extremely politically correct campus, for I went there, as several others on this site have.
