yes you either have to have great size or speed, or have dominated players at the AAA or AAAA level or in the WPIAL around here. The fact is a school would rather have the kid with speed that they can coach into a good player than the kid that is already a good player that can only gain a little speed. My guess is that Mehall could play division 1 if he wanted and somehow find his way onto the field, usually the problem is that most colleges aren't willing to take the risk on a kid with average speed unless he dominates countless other D1 players.

True, I think though it is most beneficial for coaches in evaluating players pre season, getting an idea of some persons speed. But even 20 yards would probally be more useful

There are a lot of cases where kids can run terrible forty times and dominate with speed on the football field. Whether it be because of the surface or not being able to run alone it happens from time to time. A lot of kids will be losing track meets in the spring to the same kids you saw chasing them around all game in the fall.

Mehall and Lowry are very similar runners. I actually used to watch them play against eachother years ago at the PeeWee league in Geistown and even then you could tell they were special. Neither ever turned into a track star, but I've seen both of them being chased by track stars on friday nights!

Given mehalls average speed and rather average size this makes him a "tweener" for the small 1-aa and high end DII his pass catching ability vision shakes etc should allow him to be involved in some packages. It all comes down to who is willing to give a 5'10" white running back from a rural area a shot. I have scene many great running backs who did not excel at the college level for one reason or another (insert Chad Shilling Jesse Jones Brice Merrtiff Paul Forcellini even Eric D'Carrion) they are still great high school players who may not have fit in. In regards to 40 times and how they should be evaluated there is a whole lot of latitude even with NFL scouts. I have Larod ran as fast as 4.36 and as slow as 4.48 or so depends who is on the watch think human error. The value in the 40 time is that it gives the coaches a little more knowledge on top of the already important game film where the hips etc can be evaluated. It also gives smaller school players a chance to show their perhaps superior speed.

The thing is a lot of players go D1 who don't deserve to based on their skills and simply get signed for size/speed. Most of these players never pan out, and the D1 schools that can find the kids with the skills and speed/size are the ones who win. So if you're a smaller Division 1 team, do you take the kid with the great size/speed for the chance of him being great? or the solid overall individual who knows the game and will be a very good role player in college? College recruiters always look for the big stars or the potential for them to be big stars and not gelling a team with people who know the game. A lot like the Dallas Cowboys..

There's no doubt Mehall and Lowry could play for a lot of Division 1 programs and be successful with their ability on and off the field. The problem is in this day and age schools are recruiting a lot of players who will never even make it a full year on the team due to grades and other things for the chance of that player being a stud.

Shawn was a great football player in his own right.... You give Shawn 20 pounds in frame and an inch or two in size and you have a Major D1 recruit.... Just another example of kids from our area that are great players that get the shaft for players who just arent that good with size..

And him also saying that James Mehall was really good is truth to... Them two alway played on the same team together... And Shawn is def.. going to stick up for one of his brothers from South Fork :D

In my years watching peewee I've seen some dang good players..
The most dominating player in PeeWee history was Pecora, he played an extra year against kids way younger than himself. It was like he went through puberty and played against 10 year olds. A kid up there last year from FH, Shareef Blough also stood out to me because no one in the entire league could catch him when he was at 3/4 speed..
