This is the year, with this Ridge team.
This team is ranked #2 in the state for a reason. They're incredibly deep.
In my 50+ years of following local athletics, I've often been perplexed by the idea that a D5 championship is good enough, that winning the district is the measure of success for the Bedford and Fulton County teams. We see the same type of culture in D6, but with a few exceptions of higher expectation; think Tyrone football under John Franco.
The problem is not the talent on the mat, but the expectations of the community. Telling competitive athletes that, even though they're ranked second, they shouldn't expect too much when going up against a school like Reynolds or BS. Tell these kids that sixth is good enough, and that's exactly what you'll get. It's the D5 mentality, and you're placing it on one of the finest teams your district has produced, in any sport, over the past 10 or 15 years.
Is Chestnut Ridge talented and deep enough to beat Bethlehem Catholic? Probably not, but getting to the finals should be an expectation of the team, and their fans.
Good Luck to Chestnut Ridge! We are CR!
Excellent post, and something I have also noticed since moving here from Pittsburgh several years ago. There is talent all over the state, not just in the big cities/towns, and you are correct that alot of people 'limit' their expectations for our area. There is no reason that CR shouldn't come home with a medal, and to expect anything less is crazy.
Good luck CR.

So you feel Bedford has underperformed at the state duals before? How is that?
I think this Ridge team is good and could make the finals. I feel they are on par with a couple of the past Bedford teams. But they haven't even won a match yet and they are one of the greatest teams in any sport in the last 15 years? Time will tell.

What is Bedford's best finish in the state tournament during their five year run as D5 champions?
Are we to be impressed with the largest school in the district continually beating Chestnut Ridge, Northern Bedford, and North Star and then placing 6th or worse at states?
The Bison (or Bisons, if you're from Bedford) strut around at Windber as the best, and largest, program in the district, and then travel to Hershey to be whiped out by teams like Burrell (49-11) last year or in 2011, if I remember correctly.
Good Luck Ridge. Represent D5 well.

Lefteye's response should to this should be great.
Bedford finished 4th 1 year, top 6 3 years and top 8 1 year.
Bedford is not the largest school in D5.
If you are going to bash Bedford's Hershey performance then what does that say about the rest of D5 if they couldn't even beat Bedford once during that 5 year stretch?
fwiw Bedford and the rest of D5 don't have the recruiting aspect to assist their teams, while plenty of the AA powers often supplement their rosters with transfers ... specifically Beca, Shady Side and Burrell, idk about NW powers Reynolds and FLB.

Wow that is very disgracing to what bedford has done in the past 4 years. They placed 4th in the state in 2009 i believe. If i also remember correctly they were in the top 8 in those past 4 years. Im sorry but for a small district like d-5 i think Bedford has represented well.
Correct me if I'm wrong but i think bedford beat CR in the district dual finals last year? Im fairly sure CR would have had the same outcome. Bedford has earned the right to be confident.
CR has yet to even won a match at hershey. When they make a run like Bedford has they will have the right to be just as confident as bedford. I don't call it strutting, i call it confidence.

Lefteye is busy at Hershey getting ready to support the Lions. His car windows are even decorated with the blue and gold!

And I agree, there is no reason to bash Bedford's success. They deserved to be here before and this year it's CR turn. Bedford fans and coaches have been nothing but respectful all week following their loss last weekend. I hope CR represents well, just as Bedford has done in the past.

Wow! Let's not turn this into a competition thing between two great wrestling schools. Just cheer and root for our area teams that represent us. Bedford had some pretty solid teams and represented well. They wrestled hard down at the duals for years and represented us well just as ridge I hope does this year. Adults are arguing over rival kids that wrestle for our district. Just cheer our represented teams on, not argue who did better, would have done better, or was a better overall team. go lions.
