The refs were asked if they wanted to press charges and they declined. I spoke with two of them Saturday and they said the Windber cops blew the situation up and made it a lot worse than what it needed to be.

A few comments!!!

Why doesn't the PIAA do a better job of policing the referee's?

Is there a system for schools to send in game tapes and say WATCH THIS GAME!!! They sucked.

Why is a referee allowed to work a game at a school that he/she played for and graduated from. (Hint there is a reason they call homer city the homerdome!!)

Why are referee's allowed to work games that they have relatives playing in. (Hint there is a reason they call homer city the homerdome!!)

How do we get younger, and competent people involved in officiating?

Should there be a mandatory retirement age for officials or an athletic test?

I will say so far this year the referee's have been much better in the games I have seen but there are officials out there (in all sports) that should not be allowed to officiate. I know of one official that was banned from one chapter and just joined another. Referee's should be doing the job because they love doing the job. Not because it is easy money and they can pretty much make whatever calls they want.

So I have this straight, the refs couldn't control the situation themselves so they then request the police to help defuse the situation....something rarely seen on a h.s. football field. After getting the help they requested, these refs are now out there criticizing they way the police do their job? Really? Am I really hearing this right?

I don't know if what you say is correct but if so, the PIAA needs to drop these officials and not allow them to officiate another game as long as they live. Remember, it was the officials that requested the help since they themselves couldn't handle the situation. I saw everything. They felt threatened, waved for the police and then those same police officers were pretty much forced to protect the officials because that coach didn't seem as though he had any intentions in stopping. The fact that the official called in the police in the first place is proof that they felt threatened. And now to criticize them for doing their job?

Btw, I'll say this about how that game was officiated. One word...terrible. No wonder Township coaches were irate. In my opinion they played a role in the outcome of that ballgame. I'm not talking about just the final series either. Windber benefited from bad calls the entire game and one led to a Windber TD just before the half.

As a life member of the FOP with many friends in many different agencies, This is the norm. Call the police for help then complain about the way they do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nobody wants the police around until THEY need them.

Yep..I'm a huge supporter of our police department and what you say is exactly right. They are like our teachers and coaches, undervalued and readily available to take verbal abuse and criticism even when it isn't deserved. Again, we complain about not having enough good officers but a lot of times we deserve it. Who in their right mind wants to be a police officer nowadays? Underpaid, constantly taking criticism and under a microscope with every move they make.

True, there are poor police officers out there but in general I think most do their job and do it correctly. My only complaint is sometimes they act as if they are kings. And yes, there a few like that here in Windber but if push came to shove I think they do everything in their power to protect and serve. One actually pissed my off just a couple hours ago. I was driving up 56 toward Cover Chevrolet. I saw him about a half mile behind me. I was doing exactly 60 miles an hour. He flew up on me, got beside me and flashed the 55 signal to me and gave me a nasty look. I wanted more than anything to stop and chat with him but it wasn't worth the confrontation. I mean, he had to be going 70 to catch me that quickly. What..does he feel the law doesn't apply to him as well. 99% of the police out there will not write you a ticket for 5 miles over the speed limit. This one decides to drive probably 20 miles over the speed limit to ask me slow down. Was that called for? With everything going on out there in the world, did this cop really find it necessary to fly down 56 to ask me to slow down 5 miles an hour?

Like I said, he pissed me off but I'd be the first to thank him for doing a job I myself wouldn't want to do. People are crazy...I'm glad to have him around...pissed or not..
