Nobody cares about students who transfer for academic reasons. People do care about whether someone is taking advantage of loopholes to do these transfers for athletic reasons. We do live in a free society which allows us to make choices to better our lives or our children’s lives. I think most are simply trying to hold onto the good old days where fairness and competition matter. The college system is a complete joke the way it is now and the high school level of fairness has been heading down the toilet for years now also. The true border schools that don’t participate in these transfer situations need to drop out of the PIAA and join together for a true sense of fair competition again.

Of course your allowed opinions, but no one should have any say. If someone wants to move their kids for sports reasons, so what. We are supposed to be free.

Why should sports be held to a different standard then the band, FAA, FBLA, the play/musical, etc.

That’s effectively what happened in college sports. Joe Smith the communications major can transfer from Pitt to WVU freely and not get penalized. Why should the communications major who happens to play football get penalized?

Because the kid playing football signed a contract to play football for that school. College sports will be dead in a couple of years and it will be considered semi-pro ball. Transfer portal is the worst thing allowed in college.
Don’t get me wrong, I think all the transferring is ridiculous; however, at the college level, it is important to remember that scholarships are only for one year, not four or five. With that being said, schools can drop athletes scholarships at the end of any given year, which is also tough. This has been the case for many, many years.

College sports would be fixed with 3 simple rule changes:

1) All NIL or Rev Share deals need to be made 100% public. A binding contract from both the student athlete and the school (or NIL organization). I don't know who to believe after disputes. Some kids say they are promised things and not getting them. Some schools are saying kids are coming in mid camp and demanding money or they are going to hold out. Kids are making horrible decisions based on money and money alone and schools definitely are deceiving 16-17 yr old kids in the recruiting process. Also, if a kid doesn't hold up their end of the contract (grades, performance, arrests, etc.) they don't get the money they were promised and if a school makes a promise doesn't keep it, they need to be held accountable.

2) All kids get a single "no questions asked" transfer per degree. You want to transfer a second time, cool but you better have graduated. I would allow unlimited "non-competitive" transfers so kids that are truly in a bad situations (need to transfer back home, have health concerns, failed out of school) have options. But in the "non-competitive" transfers you must transfer to a new level of play (Power 4 to Group of 5, FBS to FCS, or Division to Division for instance would be allowed).

3) If a school from a higher level gets an athlete via transfer, they must compensate the school they transferred from in some way. Even if it is a small monetary requirement, at least the good programs at the JuCo, DIII, DII, and FCS levels will get some sort of compensation for developing athletes out of the program. Right now, I have no idea why you would play freshman at a FCS or lower level. All you are doing to showcasing a kid that you believe is supremely talented (to be starting as a freshman) to every division of play that is above you. Maybe they will like your program and stick around, but a good chance is they will not.

As for high school, I don't really know how you police this stuff. Situations are so unique. That story of Teddy Bridgewater in South Florida is insane. Used his own money to just give kids that are some of the most impoverished in the country a chance. I know we all live in a vacuum but there are truly situations where kids just need a chance (not just for sports but for using athletics as an opportunity for life). Withholding even a single opportunity with arbitrary rules that are always going to lead to situations where a kid gets screwed doesn't seem right to me as I get older. I guess that I have changed my thought process this a little bit as I have aged.

I like the idea of offering solutions as opposed to just complaints. Identifying problems, issues and slights is easy to do, but finding ways to fix it is a lot more difficult. I’ll propose two solutions to the boundary-less high school issue that we face in PA.

1. For all team sports, any boundary-less school must play either 3A or 6A. If your enrollment qualifies you as single, double or triple then you play in the 3A playoffs. No exceptions. If your enrollment qualifies you as 4, 5 or 6A then you play 6A playoffs. This acknowledges the advantages that a boundary-less school has over a boundary school and still keeps some structure in place for classification by enrollment. If kids are transferring for academic, religious or a better educational experiences then leveling the playing field for playoffs shouldn’t matter.

2. If a player transfers to ANY high school after their freshman year of HS is completed, they are not eligible for post season competition that year. This is boundary and boundary-less. This would restrict the likelihood of a group of parents/players creating a dream team scenario. This could be challenged and overturned if the school the athlete is transferring from signs off on it. That would permit legitimate scenarios to go through, example: custody situations, moving for a parents job, academic offering (vo-tech), etc. You get your freshman year and then decide. If you’re gonna change after their freshman season, you’re permitted but automatically are ineligible for playoffs unless granted an acceptance. Kids can still attend and play where they want to. It just levels things up for playoffs.

Championships and playoffs are what really matter the most in these discussions for most folks. I think people can accept their teams competing against boundary-less schools in regular season play, but it’s tougher to accept when a team’s season ends, a player’s career ends, when a boundary school is beaten by a boundary-less. We could also pretend to that we could do separate playoffs, but being realistic, that’s probably never going to happen.

I agree 100 percent with Wally’s proposal. However the Bishops and other non-boundary schools would be the ones complaining about being treated unfairly!!! Justin Wheeler wouldn’t be able to beat the single A schools on his way to another champion!!!

So if they win states again this year plus have transfers they will be getting moved back up. Which is dumb once you get moved up you should stay there. Aliquippa doesn't get to move back down why should BG. They both have about the same number of male students.
