hey wood, ask around and find out how many former high school football players got into athletics by way of AYSO...(its a soccer organization) im sure u will find quite a lot...i know the 2000/01 bedford team, almost ALL of the starters played soccer as a youth...take away soccer and you have no athletic programs for the kids which means less people going out for football which means football collapses and America picks up sports such as cricket...sounds like fun to me!


and just a side note...figure skating is an olympic sport and football isnt...now what does that tell u?

There's no better sport for helping foot quickness than soccer, let alone endurance. I've seen big lumbering guys who truly seemed slow on the soccer field, get out on the gridiron as lineman and show some real quickness. John Topper, who was a truly great line coach, gave soccer credit for this. 'Course, what does he know, hey Holly?

There's probably a couple dozen of the former soccer kids playing football, right now in Bedford County, as Gunner suggests. Still, Holly's probably right. Soccer is dangerous to young American kids. All those years I spent of learning the sport and then coaching AYSO and seeing truly how much fun these kids were having -- why it was a waste. In fact, it was probably unpatriotic, especially that time I taped a couple English League games and had my players watch them. What in God's name was I thinking? And everybody knows that Gene Coia and Jack Monsour, who were probably the two main instigators in bringing football -- pardon me -- soccer to Bedford County -- are both probably communists. In fact, I'm probably one myself. At the very least a socialist. And those significant number of Bedford County kids whohave gone on to play college soccer -- well, what a disservice to them, when they Could be playing Football. Oh, wait, Nikki Weyant, one of my former students who plays soccer at IUP -- is a girl. Well, she could be a football manager or something. Of course, don't tell her that.

To my mind the greatest failing of the US in Iraq is that the Iraqis had the gall to field a superior soccer team in the Olympics. Maybe I can pardon George Bush for not finding those weapons of mass destruction, but I can't forgive him for not immediately starting a gridiron saturation program in the country: providing footballs for everyone -- bulldozing some of those stupid mosques down and building fields -- making sure that NFL games are beamed down -- and naming Mike Ditka to run the country till the elections. That's the reason to not vote for the guy -- not all that other political stuff.

By the way, congratulations to all those guys who survived summer football camps. It's over or almost over. I hope injuries were kept to a minimum and that you're in shape physically as well as mentally. The games start in a little over a week for local teams -- that's when the fun begins. If there's a better feeling than running onto the field for that first game when, for at least awhile, all those dreams of success are still alive -- well, let me know what it is.

And coaches -- I think a good many people out there know and appreciate how hard you're working to make these kids better players and more importantly better people. Last I checked nobody -- at least around here, is getting rich coaching -- unless you measure wealth by the "goldmine" of criticism some people are digging at right now. It's a labor of love and is still sport at its purist.

Foghorn, just a couple questions. I am asking these questions because I dont know your background. Can you provide me with a little information about your history. Teaching, coaching, what sports, how long, highlights, proudest moments, etc.

Let me do the honors Fog!!

Fog taught and walked as an athlete in the hallowed halls when blacks roamed the halls of CR and canes were in BHS. His proudest moments were when FB players would hide in the back of the room praying the wrath of Fog would not get them for not reading their nightly assignment from 1984 or Night.
Fog's athletic days are indeed a fog as his memory is quickly slipping due to the lack of red meat.

Wow I saw the CK team picture in the Shopper's Guide today....They had almost 50 kids on their team and they are a smaller A school. I wish guys at more schools were like that. Just playing football with all the guys representing the school. There are 20 seniors on the squad according to the pic!!
