When people think of Pitt's academics they immediately think of dental school, pre - med and pharmacy. Did you know their engineering and MBA in Business schools are actually ranked higher and get more notoriety?

The nit wit nation they will go to their graves claiming psu is a better overall academic institution. But here are few items they cannot refute:

Pitt was one of only nine universities, and the only public university, to claim both Rhodes and Marshall Scholars, including three Rhodes Scholarships in the last five years.

Pitt ranked in the top 25 of all universities in the world for the impact and performance of its scientific public publications, including in the top ten for clinical medicine, according to the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities produced by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan.

The Center for Measuring University Performance has ranked Pitt, along with only six other schools, in the top tier of U.S. public research universities and in the 6th tier (or top 25) among all universities according to its 2009 annual report.

As for football, we can wait and see how the season plays out. If I were a betting man I would think my $ would be on Pitt to have a more successful season this year but only time will tell.

No spinning. Just simplifying what Titan said.
WPIAL~Titan wrote:No, Pitt's players choose their majors carefully and get solid academic guidance, just like Navorro Bowman when he majored in Crime, Law, and Justice.
And he also put Pitt and PSU's academics on the same level. Which, according to him, isn't even close to the case.

Selective reading at it's best, again.
Article was from 2004, but when's the last time you saw an article have a quote like this regarding Penn State:

"Pitt increased its football graduation rate from 16 percent to 31 percent for the 1997 recruiting class."
Here's the link:
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsbu ... 45565.html

Now remember... EVERY SCHOOL IN THE NATION has to play by the same rules. Including the mentioned Syracuse, ND, BC, and Penn State. So think about that before you come back with "we had walk-ons and transfers". So did everyone else. 100% dropping to 16% is NOT something that can be excused based on walk-ons and transfers. Especially when Penn State's was 76% and has a lengthy history of walk-ons earning scholarships. So what should Penn State's have been, had walk-ons been counted? 86%?

Long and Harris are correct in their statement that grad rates fluxuate w/ coaching changes. But they are taking a stance here that it is something out of their control. No, sorry, guys. The real explanation behind the "grad rates / coaching change mystique" is that new staffs care more / less abut academics. If Coach A graduates 90% of his kids and gets fired, and coach B comes in and doesn't care as much, obviously the rate will drop. This is not an uncontrollable situation like Long and Harris are trying to sell.

The bottom line is that Harris did not care enough about academics and it shows.

TAE, you really are dumber than you project:

Here is a breakdown of how Pitt football coach Walt Harris' first recruiting class (1997) fared:

Recruits: 13

Graduated in six years: 4 (31%)

Graduated in six-plus years: 2 (15%)

Transferred/Dismissed: 5 (38%)

Playing in NFL: 1 (0.08%)

Did not graduate: 1 (0.08%)

Walt's first class had ONE (1) player out of 13 who did not graduate who stayed with the program for 4 or 5 seasons. ONE. ONE (1).

One player went to the NFL, and 6 graduated in 6-7 years following their enrollment at Pitt.

FIVE players were transfers (I am assuming players who transferred in or out of the program) or were dismissed. Of course, Penn State would know nothing about dismissing players because they're allowed to run amock with no accountability and get away with felonious assault, DUI, harsssment by communication, use of weapons, and more.

Hey wait...There's a method to this madness...Not dismissing players allows them to stay, play ball, and earn their degree in personal training. Do you think this makes PSU's grad rates look better?

WIth that said, the question we should be asking is: Why isn't PSU's grad rate 100%??? PSU should have a 100% graduation rate, given Joe's lack of discipline which keeps kids on the team so they can earn a degree in some rigorless academic program, and the stability of their coaching staff.

In addition, doesn't the Grand Experiment say that it should work EVERY TIME?

Thanks again for helping to prove my point, TAE.

Are you sure Harris got the boot at Stanford for just a lack of wins? I'd ask around a little bit.

Titan, every school has to play by the same rules. Penn State's class had 76%. Pitt' had 16%. "THEY ALL GRADUATED IN 14 YEARS!!!!!" It doesn't matter. The criteria is the criteria, and Pitt **** the bed, just like they do every time they take the field. What part of this dont you get: EVERY SCHOOL HAS THE SAME CRITERIA AND NONE ARE AT 16% EXCEPT PITT.
