Shane Rugg committed to Lehigh University today. He chose Lehigh over preferred walk-ons at University of Maryland, Purdue, and Temple from what I have heard among numerous other offers.

good choice by Rugg. No point in going to Maryland where he'd never play a snap just to apease the people who overhyped him the past few years. I hope he's a humble kid and wish him the best of luck.

Except for Fordham, which will begin giving football scholarships in 2010, there is no athletic aid for football players in the Patriot League. Any aid for football players at schools like Lehigh is NEED-BASED, treating football players like the rest of the student body. The problem with these schools, like Lafayette, Lehigh, Holy Cross, Bucknell, Cornell is Title IX. If these schools would give out 60 football scholarships, for example, they would then have to give out 60 FEMALE athletic scholarships. This, of course, would not be cost-effective for these universities. Therefore, NO athletic scholarship money for football. The following is the expected cost of attending Lehigh University for 2009-2010, straight from the Lehigh website:

Housing $ 5,910
Full meal plan $ 4,290
Technology fee $ 300
Estimated books and personal expenses $ 2,220
TOTAL expected costs of attendance $ 51,050

Annual total to attend University of Maryland as a non-state resident is $ 37,414. Assuming that someone may get similar ACADEMIC aid at Maryland or Lehigh, being a walk-on at UM would cost approx $ 13,000 LESS per year than a football player at Lehigh.

Cost to attend Temple as an in-state resident is $ 26,398. Considering all things being equal, it will cost $24,600 LESS per year to attend Temple than Lehigh. That is about $100,000 more for a 4 year college education if you attend Lehigh. And the thing is, if you are GOOD ENOUGH as a walk-on football player, you may EVENTUALLY be awarded a football scholarship at Maryland or Temple.

El moldo -- Do you think Shane Rugg would have had ANY chance whatsoever of getting into Lehigh, one of the top 5 engineering schools in the USA and top 40 overall, had he stayed at Windber? Ultra pitiful, uncompetitive Westpac football and limited math cirriculum would have relegated this young man to lower level school and limited his potential. Now imagine what a future he has in front of him. Congratulations to this young man and his family.

The paper says today that Glessner will be attending St. Francis on a football scholarship, and Gdula will too.
