Educational value of athletics is easy to explain...as the edcation of children encompasses much more than the three r's. A lot of education is socialization in the community. Athletics teaches two fundamentals that are paramount to success in life...discipline and team work.

A friend of mine works for a for-profit secondary education school, a school which is run by a business model, and there are both good parts and bad.

Good- Students get a great education due to the fact that if you have an underperforming teacher they are fired. If you can not do your job, then they will find someone else to do it.

Bad (if you want to call it that)- The students are seen as dollar signs but in a different way. A for-profit school gets paid for the more students they have, just like a business, yet on the other hand to keep employers hiring their graduates they can only put out the best product. If not their reputation goes down and so does their income. Therefore they may accept other students that will not be accepted at other schools but they have much hire standards like attendance and dress code that helps mold these students into a better professional.

Teachers are paid as per their experience and are paid to continue their education, up front, no reimbursement etc... They also have a better bottom line because since they are business modeled they understand how to cut back on waste and unneeded and escessive positions which are seen at public schools and institutions.

Southpaw you also forgot competition. What the US was founded on. You must compete for a starting postion just like you have to compete for the top jobs in a workplace. Because of the presure situations that you face in sports you become better able to handle stress in everyday life along with succes and failure! Sports teaches life lessons that a formal education can not produce! A person that does not see the education value in sports and athletics never had the chance to experience them like most do!

I participated in sports. If anything they hinder the pursuit of education. One of the reasons we have a surplus of teachers in this country and a deficit of engineers, doctors and scientists is we spend way too much time bouncing a ball or missing a block.

Then you must have had a bad experience or something because sports teach more than a teacher can. I am a teacher, I understand what sports bring to the table yet at the same time education is what should come first. That is why the athletes along with other extracurricular activities hold their participants to higher academic standards. They are rewarded for their good grades by being able to participate in those sports.

As fo that being the reason we have a surplus of teachers and a deficit of engineers etc... just go to the southern states and try to find a surpluss of teachers. Their education system down there is 10x worse than ours. A lot of my friends who went to school and got their teaching degree went down there because of the amount of better paying teaching jobs.

My cousin went to a public school in North Carolina and her 7th grade English teacher was foreign, and was still taking English classes herself to better learn the language etc...

Yes I did not use the best grammer or double check my spelling, one because I am not an English Major and two I didn't really care. It is an online forum where grammer is the least of my worries. It is no where near as bad as some of my students using text talk in their research papers and lab reports. Get overit Moldo and contribute to the forum in a constructive manner.

I can't believe a teacher wrote that sports can teach more than a teacher. Perhaps in lieu of school kids should just play volleyball and soccer.

If cutting costs is an objective then painful cuts to school sports programs must be made.

The problem with this is most local boards view worthwhile educational programs as expendable/wasteful because they are not mandated, especially at the elementary level. A lot of local schools are starting to get rid of teachers in the "special classes" (phys ed, library, art, music). At the secondary level they reduce staff so only core classes are being taught which doesn't allow for any electives in the students schedules. That might be fiscally sound for the taxpayers but I can't believe it's being very responsible for the students.

Back in the mid '60's, the school district I reside in had 4 sports: football, basketball, baseball, track. There were NO girls sports. There, of course, was cheerleading. NOW, the boys sports are football, soccer, cross-country, golf, basketball, wrestling, hockey, rifle, baseball, track, tennis, and volleyball. The girl's sports are volleyball, soccer, cross-country, tennis, golf, basketball, rifle, softball, and track. Cheering still exists. Are we better off today with this many sports programs?
