Incidentally, the recruited student/athlete in question "tipped off" the WPIAL/PIAA to her recruiting in her athlete of the week interview (link below). I recall reading this when it was printed (now close to 10 years ago), laughing, and saying to a good friend, "Uh Oh!!!!!!" Within days, this coach was suspended by the WPIAL and as you read above, filed unsuccessful appeals to the PIAA and the PA court system.

Gotta love this quote from the student athlete:

GOING NORTH: Austin lives in Penn Hills and attended St. Bartholomew Grade School. Her sister, Monica Williams, attended Oakland Catholic but did not play basketball. Her brother, Damian McCoy, attends Central Catholic.

"Coach [Rottmann] came to a couple of my games at St. Bart's," Austin said. "She talked to me afterward and I just kind of liked the whole deal. I just thought North would be better for me even though my sister graduated from Oakland Catholic."
That is hilarious! Thanks for the post. I'll bet this is one of the cases that made the PIAA establish "districts" for the private schools. Private high schools like North Catholic are allowed to designate Catholic elementary schools in their vicinity as "feeder" schools. The elementary school also has the right to protest invalid claims.

Just like public schools, private schools may talk about their extra-curricular programs with students from their designated feeder schools without having to sell the total school experience. No public elementary or middle school may be deemed a feeder to a private school.

I'm pretty sure that I read in the Post-Gazette that the WPIAL ruled that Hipp is ineligible to play basketball this season as they deemed he transferred partly for an athletic purpose. Pretty dumb if you ask me, transferring to the school of your AAU coach, but some on his board have intimated that there were other reasons for the transfer such as the family was not happy with the newly hired coach.

A previous post from somebody that I saved.

"while we're talking about crazy things let's imagine combining all the westpac schools into a single A powerhouse with the sole purpose of beating the bishops every week. That way the public school hillbilly kids could have fun talking smack on the private schools and how weak the LHAC and WPIAL are. We would still give them trophies so they can feel just as special as us. We'll call it Shanksville-Berlin-Shade-Salisbury-Stony Creek-Brothersvalley-Central City-Elk Lick-Blacklick-Meyersdale-Turkeyfoot-North Star-Conemaugh Township-Windber-Portage-Ferndale Area High School and we'll send enough kids to Vo-Tech and work release to still be considered a single A school. Then we'll dedicate a whole forum to our school on bleachercoaches.com and we will degrade anybody who wants to talk about anything else. We'll win states every year and then our baseball team will scrimmage the Pirates at PNC park."

You forgot to put academy after the new schools name.

I dont have the energy to search it, but last year or the year before there was a discussion of whether an allstar team from the Westpac could beat Clariton.
